N3 with the 130x woofer

Is this a good idea?

Just wondering if I could simply drop the 130x in place of the 130's that the kit is designed for.  And if I would really gain much in the process.

My other crazy idea is to widen the baffle a little and use the 165x woofers.  Would it be as simple as that?  Adding about an inch to the width and keeping everything else the same, including crossovers?

I've considered the OB-5 and OB-7 as well but they just don't make sense in my room.  Dammit, lol.  But I really like good solid mid bass performance.  Anything that will give me more punch in the lower range is good in my book, hence the 165x idea.  But I don't know if either of those "upgrades" will be worth it, or even feasible with the N3.

First of all the whole crossover would have to change. Sensitivity would drop a couple of db, and the minimum impedance would drop to 2.75 ohms (that pretty much kills it).

If only it were that easy.

The impedance would drop to 2.8 ohms (ouch!) and you'd need 4 times the box volume.

Hehe, this is why I don't design speakers.

Anyway, I got the idea from the option on the OB-7 to go with the 130x.  Is it only possible there because the four woofers can be wired in a way that keeps the impedance the same?   Something you can't do with only two?

Anyway, seems I'll be sticking to the standard N3 build then.  Thanks for the info.

Yep,

Two pairs are wired in series to get 11.2 ohms and then those two pairs are paralleled to get back to a 5.6 ohm minimum. Then with the resistance of the inductor.... you get a nominal 8 ohm load with a 5.9 minimum dip.
