iPhone Headsets and Headphones
« on: 18 Mar 2011, 05:28 pm »
I just got a new Bluetoth headset for my Iphone 3GS - a Jawbone Icon
I have had the Apple bluetooth headset for a couple of years. It works well, but it just is not holding a charge for very long. Also it is one size fits all ears, and for me it only fits in my right ear comfortably.

So I got the Icon "Hero" for $46 from Amazon...I came with 2 hours of charged life on it (It tells you how much time is left!) and after a day there are still about 2 hours left! So I really like that - I think it will charge to 4 hours.

Still getting used to it and adjusting settings...

I saw that it could also do A2DP for music and podcasts - anyone set that up? It is apparently a seperate profile for the headset that I will need to set up.

Anyone had other experience with A2DP for, say, bluetooth stereo headphones?

I've had nothing but bad luck with the jawbone stuff. Not becuse it's poorly made, but because yours truly likes to run them through the wash with his cloths. I have done it 3 times.  :duh: so no more headsets for me! I use the Ultimate Ears 10vi triplefis. They're ok headphones which is sad that I'm saying tha given that I paid $250 for them.

I just got a pair of open box b-stock Shure SE425s from headroom for $240 and I love them.  Best IEMs I've had, and that includes super-fis, Etys, and others I don't recall the name of.

My doc told me not to wear IEMs anymore because they were all too deep in my ear and tended to give me ear infections, but the Shures are much shallower than the others listed above and fit much nicer and sound fantastic.

I believe there is a cable that you can get that lets you use them as a mic and iDevice control too, but I am not certain about that -- I just wanted something small, comfortable, with killer sound and will not keep my wife awake when I'm listening at night.

Shure makes a connector that allows you to use any set of headphones as a headset. It's just a microphone and a stereo passthrough for headphones. The triplefi's I have do this on the cable it comes with. IEMs work great for noise isolation, but they are a pain in the ass if you get a call and you want to use them. It takes quite a bit of work to get them in your ear canal while the caller waits.

I picked up a set of Altec Lansing IEM at Office Depot for $25. I wasn't too concerned about sound quality, as I only intended to use them to listen to my weekend NPR programs while at work via my EVO. They sound way better than I expected. I jacked them into my computer and listed to a few of my lossless files and was quite pleased.

Pretty comfortable too, though I have a tendency to keep snagging the cord on things and yanking them out of my ear.

Hi Jqp,

If you are after headphones for music I've had great results using a Jabra 'Halo' bluetooth headphone.  I also use Koss Porta Pro's for music and I prefer the 'Halo's'.

Regards

Rod

ps only $50US on ebay  :)

I'm listening to some uncompressed files out of the Mac as I type this (no dedicated headphone amp, just out of the front mini port). I'm not trying to sell anyone anything here, but these cheap AL earbubds sound really decent to me. Plus has a mike to make phone calls. I've not listeneed to any other ear bud units, but I no regrets over this purchase.
