A few comments on WAV:

1. WAV was indeed not supported in the initial playback release, in the current release (1.3.2 or 1.1.2 on iPad) it is, it now also supports Ogg/Vorbis which is important for some radio stations. The new announcement is here:

2. Even when WAV was not supported it would not have made a difference - at least in recent Squeezebox Server versions and with unmodified conversion settings - because by default, SBS _always_ compresses WAV to FLAC before streaming it to conserve bandwidth.

Have fun with iPeng Playback! :)

I think this same sort of functionality will be availabbl in OS 4.3, but not sure about that.  By this I mean, streaming from a NAS, and not iTunes per se.

Mark, glad you found a solution -- wich Sure IEMs are you using?  I just got a pair of se425s on b-stock special at headroom and I couldn't be happier -- best iems I've ever had and much cheaper than the original Etys I had.

The IEMs I use are SE115's I think, packaging is long gone.  Good for blocking out the world, but for airplanes I prefer my Panasonic NR phones, and for 90% of my listening it is the Grado's these days.

I have heard good things about the 425's!

Pippin,
Thank you for the WAV update.

Can anyone attest to the quality and capability of the headphone out in the IPad (Gen I)?

Does it have decent drive capability or are there significant limitations to the phones it can push?

Does it actually sound good?

Thanks, great info here

Mike--regardless of what version ipad you might be thinking of there is a great little headphone amp by Fiio its the E5 and they cost like less than $20 nowadays, I use one with my ipod and a LOD cable that lets you bypass the sound card in the ipad and use the little amp directly--sound is excellent and the little amp has a clip on the back like an ipod shuffle which you could slide on the case you may have gotten for the ipad, or a little velcro and your good to go.

My ipod case came with a belt clip which I attach to the ipod and then clip the Fiio E5 to that clip plug it in and "walla" portable rig!!!!

I've been using this new feature in ipeng for awhile now and I love it. My digital music library has become huge at over 2 TB and the fact that I can access it while walking around my apartment or sitting on my deck with an ipod in my pocket and my favorite IEM's in my ears is great for me. I can listen to anything I have, at any volume I want, anytime I want to an while roaming the apartment doing stuff or as I mentioned relaxing on my deck this little add-on works.
I use an ipod touch with a Fiio E5 and I can stream all my hi-rez stuff (I know its being down sampled or whatever to work) and I get great sound quality.
I've always thought ipeng was a great interface package for my ipod to control the music in my main room and the addition of Playback just takes it up several notches for me.

I've been meaning to thank you eclein for turning me on to this.  I use a similar function in Squeeze Pad on my iPad.  I ordered the little Fiio amp and a set of headphones.  Now I can  sit out on the deck at night, have my entire music collection at my fingertips, and not piss off my neighbors.
