I ordered my 16GB wi-fi only iPad online on March 27.  So, it's well shy of the 3-4 weeks they estimated it would take (2 weeks after the quake, so I suspect it was a reasonably good estimate Apple used by that date), but just wondering if I should brace myself for something longer.

Assuming you ordered on Apple.com the only time you should worry is when your ships by date changes. And no, I wouldn't worry about Apples supply line being effected by the Japan quake/tsunami. The reason I say that is because Japan doesn't produce much of the parts for the iPad and they certainly are not the only manufacturer for ANY of the parts from what I've heard.

Bought the iPad 2 recently, for my daughter, she's 4.  Before the iPad she always absconded with my iPhone, which she used just as easily as I do!  So I figured I'd get the iPad for her and get the use of my phone back!  Got the pink cover for it.  Kira calls it her "princess iPad" :P

I walked into our local Apple store 2 weeks ago expecting to place an order and wait for it to be delivered.  To my surprise the guy said they had the 32g and 64g wifi models in stock (black), so I got the 32g and walked out with it half an hour later.... What was it that Jason said about Colorado being the greatest state in the union?  Oh yeah :)  .....

I was surprised and a little pissed that Tyson ws able to just walk into a store to get an ipad2 I feel like he should have had to go through the same BS I did. That's what I get for being an early adopter.

oh well, I thought it was very cool that you bought an iPad for Kira! I know he's using it probably using it more than she is (especially since it's pink). It sort of inspired us. We ended up buying an iPod touch for Ryah (2 years old) she knows how to use it like it's no problem, she knows how to turn it on, unlock it and she watches movies on it, she learns her ABCs on it. I'm not kidding you, she actually is learning with the iPod she knows all her letters and she knows how to use the device.

Alright! - just got word today that my iPad2 shipped directly from China yesterday (Tuesday here..but likely Wednesday there in China)

A very pricey thing to do - I know that when we ship our smallest hand trucks from China to California for samples - the tab is usually $125.  Our item is both larger and heavier at ~ 9 lbs....but it's still costing Apple a pretty penny to ship these things directly from China.  Even with world-beating freight discounts, small packages and less than 2lb boxing....it's still gotta' be $40 a piece.

At $499, I don't think they could be making too much as it is (given all the other 10" tablets coming out are the same or more $$).  I think they're damn serious about first-strike leadership.  If they get an iPad to you they must figure you'll stay loyal to the brand and buy more as the $40 must be a fairly hefty hit to their bottom line looked at as a standalone basis.

Anyhow, maybe by the weekend I'll be iPadding  :thumb:

On the other hand, that $40 shipping from China is a drop in the bucket when you look at Apple's EXTREMELY HIGH profit margins, higher than just about any other manufacturer on earth.  I guarantee you they make a ton of money even on the base Ipad2 after shipping.

Yup, got my camera kit and red leather cover already and should have the IP2 by Monday or Tuesday of next week.  Very pumped, and as has been typical with Apple, the shipment should arrive a few days earlier than I was originally told.

This will also mean that I can leave my MBP in the office instead of lugging it up and down between the office and bedroom, and I'm looking forward to a more permanent type installation of that.

Yeah, guess so....especially as it was purchased at Apple's website so Apple isn't sharing costs that they would have to allocate to a retailer.

I thought I remember reading that Apple allowed retailers only 11% margins on iPods. Wow, that's incredibly skinny if true and really goes a long way is seeing how powerful Apple brand is to retailers.

Most computers are sold on skinny margins usually not exceeding 20%...but 11% is pathetic.

Most of my dealers give me grief if they can't make 30% (Costco and SAMs Club only make 12-15% average storewide margins they have your $50 membership fees). But, we ain't Apple  8)

Jim, you'll love it! A MBP feels down right antiquated when holding an iPad. Yes you MBP is more powerful, but I'd venture to say you won't miss it one bit.

Levi, so tell us, how is the Zagg2??? how does the keyboard feel and is it a worthwhile case?

The zaggmate2 is nice. The keyboard is small and maybe a problem with bigger fingers. Over all, the Zaggmate2 is a keeper because it doubles as a protective case and stand.
