Guys if I have to because of cash reasons get an ipad 1 am I really making a dumb move? Is it like just wait ED until the cash is there its totally worth the wait or should I just get a first gen.
The problem is typing on a regular keyboard is getting painful, even my SONY VAIO which has almost as nice a keyboard as my old Thinkpads can get to be rough. I'm no where near saying "screw it I can't type". But its definitely a future consideration, the neuropathy in my hands makes it painful to touch anything-unless its happening to you there is no way to verbally relay the feeling. I'm not bitchin, just thinking I got to do something in the next few months, maybe I just do a Gen 1 and smile about it...LOL. oops a small novelette!! sorry

Ed,

Just buy a Gen 1 now and sell it when you want to upgrade - problem solved.

If you look at the used prices, the iPads hold their value very well and you will lose little to nothing going this route.

Make sure you buy it new as the battery is not replaceable.

Make sure you buy it new as the battery is not replaceable.

Apple has a battery replacement service, $99 plus $6.95 S&H:

Also third party options are becoming available.

I stand corrected.  Thanks!

That is an expensive battery.  Again, make sure you buy it new.

The screen is replaceable too I supposed if you break it.  At a price.

Yes, glad that's cleared up as any device that has a lithium ion battery that is not replaceable, is as good as disposable as these batteries will typically only hold a charge for a couple years or slightly more or less, depending on use.  Perhaps they mean to say not "user" replaceable?

If I get one it will be from Apple- new or refurbed depending on the cash....I get a rent rebate check in July for $500 so I'll be ok...all I need is a 16 GB wifi and an AirStash (these look like nifty gadgets) then I'll have unlimited storage and can share files with my kids, friends etc...

revisiting this question from a different angle -

I assume there must be at least some members here with enough experience using multiple Apple gadgets to answer the questions;

Can any iOS4 or OS10 device be used as "remote" control of headless mini as music only server, either via ScreenShare, or numerous 3rd party software apps?

Are there restrictions or complexities to these control functions if using programs other than iTunes (such as PureVinyl/Music) as the player?

IOS can for sure. I haven't looked the OSX app catalog lately to see if a standard Mac can, but I'll check and get back.  :thumb:

As a remote control for playback, yes and yes. I'd prefer not to do the ripping process via VNC or such, but that's just my preference.

Ed,

If you can swing it soon, Verizon has brand new 16GB WiFi models for $299.

For OSX - screenshare works but can be inconvenient. There's also the issue of syncing libraries, the programs I've tried don't get all the artwork - I'm not sure why, haven't had time to mess with it.

The only ones I found so far are iTRC and TuneConnect. TuneConnect seems the best although it doesn't do artwork or have an album view. Which ones are you seeing?

At an entry level pricing of (slightly) under half, what would the advantages of MBA over iPad as a third (second portable) device in a home system, that would probably never be used for anything other than browser and e-mail if it ever left the building?

Well, it's a laptop. I see the iPad as useful if you already have a laptop and want/need another handy device. Remote control of iTunes from an OS/X device is clunky though.

The MBA does not have 3G or any sort of subscriber based internet access capabilities and as you said this is a huge plus in the iPads list of features.

Not really - you can just buy a 3G USB stick for the MBA and plug it in. That will (I assume for you as well as me) also give more options in terms of plans  e/g/ prepaid for infrequent traveling etc.

Same ones. I didn't download any of them so I'm going strictly off what I'm seeing in the app store.

A minor statistic: this thread has more replies than the original iPad thread started a year ago.

My cable TV provider, Time Warner has an App for iPad that allows you to watch tv shows anywhere in the house.  Now that is pretty cool!

Can't wait for that new Zagg mate 2 and the new iPad 2 dock.

Levi,

What are the Zagg mate2 and iPad2 doc?  I went into Fry's electronics for something else but thought I would also look at iPad accessories while I was there.  Since they did not even have an iPad to display, the salesman did not want to talk about anything iPad related. I am still trying to figure out what accessories I would want besides the folding cover.

Other than a cover and maybe a bag I would recommend getting the wireless apple keyboard if you dont end up with a 3rd party. Maybe the HDMI dongle or the camera attachment. Other than that there's really nothing else the iPad needs.
