I just bought a second Gen 1 WiFi iPad because I wanted to have it to use on trips to India and the Caribbean over the next four weeks and it didn't look like I could get my hands on a Gen 2 in time (without paying above the list price).

I look at it this way...I can have a Gen 1 now and sell it in a few months for basically what I paid for it (got it brand new and at below refurbished prices from Verizon) and move up to a Gen 2.

A friend at work brought over his Gen 2 today and we directly compared the Gen 1 and Gen 2 models using the same amps and going to the same websites. While the Gen 2 was faster, thinner, and brighter, it wasn't like the Gen 1 sucked. Whichever way you go, I think it all boils down to your use cases and what you hope to do with the iPad. Outside of doing some video conferencing, the Gen 2 isn't going to radically improve my experience.

I bought mine online the day it was released so my wait was 2-3 weeks. That said I was supposed to get delivery on April 6th. I received my shipping notice on the 24th and it was delivered on the 28th from China! I only paid for standard shipping. I was quite surprised For several reasons, one its delivery schedule fell on the weekend, and two the FedEx website said I should have received it on the 1st. Despite all that 4 days from China. So they are either ramping up production substantially or they are over estimating on shipping time. Obviously YMMV but I am thrilled with the speed in which my order arrived.

Thanks for the confirmation on the shipping time. I've actually had similar experiences -- things either arrive on time or early.

George, I understand your point about the original version being perfectly usable, but for my purposes, I always prefer the fastest machine I can get, and mostly because I have to use the screen reader, which typically consumes a bit of memory as well as processor time, and what most people would consider a reasonably responsive machine may be only marginal with various assistive technologies enabled. That said, VoiceOver is fairly responsive, but when other things lke some of the apps I mentioned that do OCR, etc. are concerned, that's when the extra power can really help.

So, I'm still glad I waited for the new model, but I don't mean to imply that the original is somehow crippled.

My old iPad battery capacity diminished over 2yrs. The new iPad2 battery lasts me over 2 days of not charging even though I use it all the time. 

I saw this ages ago. . .after someone posted it after the first iPad came out. Funny thing is, this skit came out LONG before the iPad existed. . .back in the day of old-school iPods.

Anyways, if I traveled as much as I used to, the iPad would be ideal (or the new Motorola Android tablet). Beyond that, I do want one. . .but have no need.

I've got some cash itching in my pocket and trying to decide which step to take first on ~~essential upgrade~~ frivolous toy expenditure path

1) less than 6 months til cel phone contract expires and can switch to iPhone without penalty
2) plan to replace AEx with mini as dedicated music only server and budget DAC (thinking of HRT Music streamerII)
3) already have an iMac and share MPB with the wife, but there are times when another portable would be handy, and really only need it for surfing/mail and control of music server

can only afford one at a time

suggestions?

How bad is the issue with you and your wife regarding sharing? For my wife and I we were pretty bad. iPad and desktop were not enough because often neither of us wanted to be anchored to the desk. So we got a MBA. Ironically we still argue about who gets what.

I know we're spoiled.

At an entry level pricing of (slightly) under half, what would the advantages of MBA over iPad as a third (second portable) device in a home system, that would probably never be used for anything other than browser and e-mail if it ever left the building?

In house, I'd envision it as primary remote control for music server. Of course, an iPhone 3G (or whatever follows) could do all of that and more, but with advancing presbyopia that little screen is damned hard to read, and my fingers seem to get fatter ever year.

Will the MBA support 3G connectivity? In my case that could be a major advantage for the iPad - wider potential coverage area not dependent on access to Wi-Fi network.

For just checking email and browsing the iPad is pretty much 90% of what you need. The MBA does not have 3G or any sort of subscriber based internet access capabilities and as you said this is a huge plus in the iPads list of features. The MBA is without a doubt the best Laptop I have ever owned in regards to weight, size and ease of use. It is by no means a powerhouse, but if you need something that is better at multitasking this is the machine to get.

MBA can support flash, which is a big deal for some people, iPad no.

The iPad also has 10hours of battery life which is the best of any device I can think of with these capabilities. The MBA is about 5 hours which ain't bad, but with heavy use you will be reaching for the charger at least once a day.

I vacillate between the two quite often. I favored the MBA to the iPad 1, but now I think I favor the iPad 2 to the MBA for shear portability.
