I am curious how well the iPad 2 works with "G" routers. I don't want to purchase a new "N-Series" router if I can avoid it. Feedback would be appreciated.

Hey guys..a question for owners of 1G or 2g ipads if they shipped yet...are the virtual keyboards OK to use?? My health issues worsen and my hands are totally numb now with my left arm starting to get involved so its become really difficult to use a laptop, even my full size VAIO laptop is painful to type on now, the keys are easy to push but it wouldn't matter if they were tissue so I am saving for an ipad2 and my hope is I can sit with it in my lap and using the touch keyboard might not be painful...I know its hard to believe, I know it amazes me 24/7 how hard things have become to use.
Are the ipad virtual keyboards OK to use?? Does Apple have Swype on board yet??
Any advice as to usability for disabled folks with these would be a great help..Ed

Wow Ed, that sucks. Is the Lyrica helping w/ the pain? I know it won't help w/ the numbness issue. If it makes you feel any better, Phil Collins had to give up drumming do do nerve damage. He can no longer hold a stick in his left hand. (yeah, I know everone hates Phil because of his sappy ass ballads, but he was a hell of a good drummer IMHO)

Both iPad 1 and 2 work fine with a G routers, no need to upgrade to an N router for the iPads.

I find the virtual keyboards easy to use but they are slower than an actual keyboard for me. Probably the most difficult part I have with the iPad is the autocorrect isn't always useful, but that can be turned off. If you are having issues typing, I would guess the buttons would still be a problem for you then. The top, volume, mute/rotate buttons are harder to press and smaller physically than a normal key on a keyboard. Volume and the mute/rotate button are more or less set it and forget it, so might not matter in the end. The top button is used to "wake" up the iPad from it's light sleep but only need to use it once per session. The home button you will use more frequently but in comparison to the others it is much easer to press. It's such a pricy gadget, so if you can see if a friend can let you test drive one or check it out at a store, i would recommend doing that first.

skunark- I use an ipod and undrstand what you mean by the home button etc..they shouldn't be a problem at least the home button because it has the indentation that spreads out the pressure a bit, I type fine on and ipod I just can't see it as well and my hands do weird spasm like things and tapping a letter may be easier than actually having to push a key down. Its hard to understand I know but I can't feel the keys on my laptop at all and Must look at the keys to type or all bets are off. So I'm a hunt and peck guy again like in HS...ipads virtual keys make a tone when tapped if one so desires correct??

I may actually have to add weight to the actual device so I can tell its in my lap, if it generates enough pressure and I feel that something is there then I'm OK, sounds crazy but it actually very difficult for me to carry a laptop around and to open it if it arrives safely...LOL.. I may be the only guy thats ever asks Apple to make me a five,six pound ipad...I'll figure this out...thanks and let me know on those new questions I asked when you guys get a chance.

You can enable keyboard clicks and lock sounds. I guess to add weight that could be achieved with different cases that latch on to it.

Also you can use a Bluetooth keyboard with it. I haven't tried that but might provide a more ergo setting when you do feel like typing on a keyboard.

Hey guys--so I'll have some disposable income soon and an ipad is top of the list so should I get original unit on clearance and get more storage or go for ipad2??

I'm 80% sure I'm going to get ipad2 just because its the latest and has some cameras so I can chat with my kids but I just wanted to pose the question to folks that already own one or have played with a 2....the more I type here about it I'm thinking ipad2 is a must....so nevermind--LOL

If I were you I'd go for the 2. Why, because of the extra processing power. And why again? Because, you may someday want to make the transition to speech input, and the extra horsepower will really help there.

The odds of you getting an iPad 2 at this point within the next week or two is basically 0. I have tried A LOT to get one and have had nothing but heartache. What a pain and a complete waste of time. I ordered one on the day of release and will get it in two weeks. If you haven't ordered one by now expect to get one in approximately 2 months. No joke.

I've looked at the iPad1 and have been impressed....but, not enough to pull away $500 to purchase one.

I ducked into my local Apple store yesterday while the wifey went clothes shopping and I doodled with the iPad2.

WOW - this one is nicely conceived. The display looked brighter (better backlit LED's?) and it moves a LOT faster than I remember the original moving (dual core processor?). The two camera's move it up to as useful as my iPhone4 is now (I use SKYPE a lot).

I have my well-equipped laptop for onboard storage needs and I have 100GB SugarSync 'cloud' storage ($100 yearly) redundant backups (a great service - highly recommended for its ease-of-use). As I envision a tablet to be a glorified email reader and internet wonk for me (and the wife), so the 16GB version is sufficient. Wi-fi only is fine - I work from my wi-fi'ed home and I have tethering on my iPhone (which now allows you to use as a personal wi-fi hotspot for other devices that need it). So, home or on the road I'm covered with reasonable high speed internet service.

I poked around at the competitive tablets from others - and they are either underwhelming, nonexistent or the soon-to-be-models are higher priced (like Motorola's XOOM, at $589 retail for 32GB version). I now have almost 50 apps in my iTunes, so easy syncing with my iPhone and iPad is an additional allure for me.

Frankly, it feels like a jewel in the hand and it seems really well sorted - every bit worth the $500 they charge for it.

So, I blew off the dust bunnies from my credit card and bought one (in white) yesterday

. Getting them at retail is nearly the stuff of fiction these days, so I ordered one from Apple. Says 3-4 weeks to get it - I'm guessing it'll come a lot faster - particularly if they ship from San Jose area (I'm only 50 miles north of Apple's Cupertino headquarters, which is midway between San Jose and San Francisco)

Will give ya'll my initial impressions when I will likely get the device - in what I hope to be more like 2-3 weeks from now

This is really a device whose time is right - such excellent execution from Apple on this one so early in a new product's life. If the Android competitors are better somehow, a new era in personal, portable efficiency may be reached by these awesome tablet designs.

Which service provider do you have? I have AT&T, and last time a looked (a while back), tethering was not allowed and/or implemented for iPad..

I am so bummed...I have to wait...damn...Hey good luck with it ChairGuy!!!!! I went online last night to dream shop the apple store and I figured for $600 I'd get Black/wifi/16 GB ipad 2, the dock its sits in so I can have it next to me so I can ipeng my way through my tunes, and the Cream colored leather roll up cover thing Apple has...all for $600 ish... solid tech, awesome design, cameras front and back for chatting with my young boys, the closest Android device is a lot more and after using my Android phone for almost 2 years I just think Android is too young, and needs a lot more tweaking.

All I need is surfing the web, email, ipeng and tunes and a few movies if I travel...the biggest thing for me is the touch typing...even though I mentioned above my hands were feeling better that didn't last long.

Someday I'll have one, please let us know how it is when you get it!!!!

Pez indicated with the latest software update from Apple (I forgot which version...whatever the latest is) now changes the iPhone from 'tethering' to a 'Personal Hotspot' in the General Settings area.

So, the iPhone can be used as a Hotspot for a wide variety of wi-fi devices...including (I hope) the iPad2

I have AT&T and I think I pay $15 a month for the service. At least once a month I'm in a hotel that wants to charge me $12.95-$14.95 for 24hours of wi-fi service...I simply refuse to pay that...and use my AT&T tethering (now, Hotspot) and it almost pays for itself.

As well, it's a good backup if Comcast Hi-Speed Cable is down (which is rare, but happens).

In fact, just last week Hi-Speed cable was down in my home (where I work) and I was able to use the HotSPot feature for both my wife and I to connect thru AT&T's service (which is slower than hi-speed cable, but MUCH faster than dial up - our only other option if we didn't have the $15 tethering/HotSpot service)

Previously, only one of us was tethered during hi-speed cable outages....now both of us are covered

EDIT: I googled around and indeed AT&T 'tethering' is now a HotSpot for iPad users. I pay $20, not $15 a month for the tethering service and have the $25mo/2GB data plan required, too.

Two phones, my wife and mine, cost ~ $153 a month with all taxes now (we use Heytell app to communicate and has kept text messaging needs to a minimum now so 2GB option if more than sufficient for us)

My decision on whether or not to purchase an iPad hinges on this requirement.

There are over 65,000 Apps for the iPad, and very few of them are made by Apple. Logmein is available for the iPad (along with a lot of other screen sharing Apps).

If you open iTunes and click on the iTunes store you can browse the iPad Apps. In addition, most of the Apps available for the iPhone will run on the iPad as well (although they won't fill the screen at full resolution).
