I already have two PC laptops.  The iPAD could take the place of one of those if I could use it at work.  Unfortunately, we don't have wi-fi, and I won't pay for a AT&T or Verizon data plan.  If I buy a tablet it will have to have an ethernet port.

Maybe one of the androids will have an ethernet port?   :dunno:

For now, my PCs, Mac, and Droid phone control my music server just fine.   :thumb:

I seriously doubt Ethernet ports will be a part of any tablet design. IMO there is 0 chance.

Well, then I will stick to small laptops until wi-fi is more universally accessable.  Data Plans are too pricey for how often I NEED to use them.

I just read a news article that said Apple was offering a $100 refund on original iPads purchased in the last two weeks. Sorry, I do not have an official link or specific dates included in the refund period.

After reading more about the lack of a "real" USB port my enthusiasm for an iPad 2 has waned dramatically in direct proportion to its usefulness to me. Thank all of you for the explanation of tha "faux USB"  on the iPad 2.

You can buy a number of wireless routers (b/g/n) for around $35 to use at your residence.  Clearly cheaper than paying ATT and Verizon for a 3g dataplan.  Also unless your laptops are pre-historic, you can add freedom to you laptops with a wifi router.

I'm wondering if Darrel is referring to lack of wi-fi at work?

In which case many companies may have serious security concerns about allowing additional devices and or/personal use of existing network. At least that's certainly the case at my office - the President/COO installed a wi-fi router for use with his (now) MBP, and keeps the password to himself - all other visiting laptops have to connect to dedicated spare LAN port.

If not, the best recent upgrade to my own home network was replacing older Airport Extreme with TimeCapsule - our wireless performance improved dramatically, and by trading in the old router, I was able to acquire a new ATV streamer for $20.  Now that's a nifty toy - even if you don't buy content from iTunes.  Depending on the structure of your local TV cable provider's  movie / TV channel plans and PPV rates, the (still) $8/mo Netflix can be the best bang for buck portion of your whole subscription budget.  Our current bundle for phone/internet/HDTV to 2 PVRs (more channels than we can really ever watch/record)  is approx $200/month

which in a round-about way brings me to the question - does(will) the iPad2(3) stream the same degree of content via Airtunes?

Isn't one option to buy an Airport Express - plug it into the ethernet and create your own mini-wireless network?

I missed the at work bit, but where I work we two WiFi networks.. private and guest w/password.

Maybe the iOS 4.3 will allow bluetooth networking with a laptop?   It's currently not supported:

precisely - the dual wireless networks is an interesting idea, but unless the network contains no sensitive financial or proprietary IP data, you should be worried about an IT department that didn't have security concerns

I have never been a fan of the airport extreme.  Could give us a little info on the trade in and not to be totally ignorant but is this streamer you speak of?

the Time Capsule was purchased at a separate big-box retailer several weeks prior to the "trade-in", which was courtesy of local reseller who has a steady demand for used Apple gear in working order

the "streamer" in question was the new Apple TV black box - as my immediate family are now operators of at least 10 separate pieces of Apple gear ranging from iPods to iMac, I've had enough recent experience to be amazed at the value of what the streamer can accomplish - of course it's really only a conduit for/ "enabler" of other system components, but for me that doesn't detract from its  cool-osity

From my corporate days I seem to remember that most IT guys are up to their asses dealing with Windoze issues, and wouldn't notice a little AE sticking out of an outlet - it looks just like an Apple power supply 8)

I love it when new technology comes out, it provides us bottom feeders with so many new opportunities to try on something newer (to us) without the initial cost of something like an iPad.

I have to say though, that using my iTouch for the past 2 months, it is mostly a walkman, with the ability to "see" into the Net.  Just how I have been using it.

Well, the hardware might be easy to hide, but my point was that any corporate IT guy not capable of detecting additional "unauthorized"  and potentially insecure wireless connections would likely have at least that portion of his job description reassigned.  In most cases the actual consumed bandwidth would not be a big issue -  but absent rigorous security, that's a big-ass back door

One of my friends bought an iPad 2 weeks ago (her company has a couple of apps she supports on the iPad and she just decided to go for it since the company was not going to buy one just for her, she has a Macbook Pro also).

Tomorrow she will trade it in at the Apple store for a new iPad 2! That's better than what some are reporting, a $100 refund! She was only expecting that, but when she went to the store...

She won't trading anything tomorrow. iPad 2 isn't for sale until the 11th.

I don't know what kind of cellphone plan you use, but most modern phones have apps to create your own portable wireless modem/router.  My Touch Pro 2 on Sprint has an app that allows tethering and can be used with an Ipod/Ipad anywhere...very convenient in the rare spots another wireless spot isn't available.

I have an Ipod Touch 4G and have to say that I hardly use it for its music-playing capabilities.  I have JH13pro IEMs and the ITouch is a nice sounding DAP, but I just can't stand ITunes for importing music.  All of my files get sorted stupidly amongst different albums and it's just so much more complicated than using my Sansa Fuze.  With that being said, I use my ITouch more than just about anything else I own... these new Ipads are bigger versions of the Itough 4G (now that they have cameras) and I'd pick one up if the size weren't a big awkward to me for carrying around (can't really ditch my traditional Netbook/Laptop for note-taking and certain Flash-played based functionality).

Lastly, I have an Airport Extreme...from...around the time the aluminum bodied Macbooks came out (two years ago or so, I believe) and it's by far the best router I've ever used.
