yes, but if it's like the iPhone 4 you cannot use video very effectively on 3G, but wifi is free game.

Yes, this would be a homebody, no 3G needed - videophone, stereo remote, checking the traffic/weather, looking stuff up, etc. It would live in the kitchen.

Sigh - another apple gadget  :shake:

I love that they have the audacity to release a white one. WTH happened with the white iPhone. It never really materialized.

skunark,

Thank you for the explanation of the the Dock Connector to USB Port (dongle) and the Dock connector To USB Cable. I was not aware of the dongle option.  It may (or may not) work for me. I hate when that happens.

More interesting news..

The HDMI adapter will also work with the old iPad and iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4.    That just shot down the only technical reason I had.    Only reason left is a "hand me down" promise.

Glad I was forced to wait, I'll be using my rent rebate check and getting the cheapest one I can get...camera to chat with my kids, wifi for when I'm in bed for my 3 hours a day with feet up to keep ankle swelling down and surf AC or control my Squeezebox with ipeng, Moss Rehab will soon have wifi for patients as I may be spending a few weeks every few years getting my balls busted doing physical therapy if I am lucky enough to fight off the dreaded wheelchair. I waited because I had too but it was a good thing because for my first one I'll get a bunch more convenience for the same price. I might spring for the Verizon version as I'm already a Verizon customer and sometimes wifi isn't easy to find in some of these places I keep finding my skinny ass in...ipads don't do Flac yet do they??

No FLAC compatibility is one of the reasons why I have a love/hate relationship w/Apple. But I found out today for $9.99 they sell an app called FLACPLAYER. I have not bought it
yet for my itouch but looked into this today and the reviews are good.

Ideally i would prefer iTunes to convert FLAC to either a lower bit-rate ACC or to a ALAC on the fly, such that the actual iPad hardware can do the decode for longer batter life.     When i use a mobile device I'm almost always in a noisy environment so I not asking for audiophile quality playback.   I will just convert FLAC to ALAC for my iPhone, iPad just gets pre-loaded with Top Gear.

You say "Ideally" I assume meaning, Itunes can't do this yet?. I have a conversion program but it's a ROYAL PITA to have to do all that work to entertain myself. I love everything bout the apple touch/ipad cept Itunes of course!

iTunes will convert WAV, AIFF, ALAC and higher bit rate files to 128 AAC on the fly as you sync your device if you check that option.      Flac,  yeah, not that supported by any major company Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, practically all music labels, so this battle is going to be a long one unless one of them steps it up.  Doubtful Microsoft has the power to shift as they are still stuck with the not-for-sure play-for-sure drm crap.

If you have a mac, look at MAX (sbooth.org), only concern then would be disk space.

Rumour has it the iPhone 5 will be available only in white.   :banghead:

So, the newest, best phone they make will share the same cosmetics as their entry level MacBook? :wtf:

I'm glad they didn't add 4g, because if they did, I'd have to get it.  Very happy to wait for the iPad3 4G :)

I find that highly unlikely.

Here is the quote from apple re audio:

Audio Playback
    * Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
    * Audio formats supported: HE-AAC (V1 and V2), AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
    * User-configurable maximum volume limit
    * Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through with Apple Digital AV Adapter (sold separately)

__________
So I assume this still means no usb port and anything output has to go through the dock connecter to usb dongle/attachment/camera connection.  As stated above, thats a pain because it has a tendency to fall out and you can only hold the ipad with the connector facing up. Amen on the love/hate with apple.  the dongle is still what i call a "jerry rigged" solution.

alas, audiophiles, since i think this issue is at its core, wrapped up on DRM issues, dont think we will ever see a direct digital out on a ipad.  Just my two cents

There's quite a crop of tablets coming from other makers, primarily on the Android system - tho the iPad is quite a tasty morsel, I'm going to look at all competition before deciding.

I may decide, as I'm typically not an early adopter, to just wait for the next wave of designs coming to market.

I have to say that the picken's from competitors is awfully slim at this time  :(

A tablet is a 'want', not a 'need' for me.

"4.3 will add personal hotspot for iPhone 4."

Will there be a monthly charge for this, or included in the data plan for the phone?

From what I understand , no monthly charge ( a first for Apple) and it can operate up to 5 devices.

I'm an iPad early adopter, this is a list of the main activities I do with it:

Internet surf
Email
Send invoices and simple business accounting tasks via QuickBooks
Stream Netflix movies
Watch stored movies
Audiobooks
Book reader
Controller for Squeezebox
Controller for Tivo
Skype (without video)
Presentation(s)
Board games - scrabble, monopoly
Action games - flight simulator (there's a great shuttle landing sim) etc....

It's almost replaced my MacBook Pro and also does things my MacBook can't do.  I recall when it was first released many AC pundits found it difficult to get their heads around its position in the market place.  I'm not sure that the alternatives have the same degree of support in terms of available Apps?

I'll wait for the iPad 3, but I'm tempted by the camera option in the latest version - a major omission in the iPad 1.

I had been waiting to pull the trigger until the iPad2 was released.  Now that it's been unveiled, I don't see that it does much more than the original...at least for what I need it to do at the moment with work applications.  So, I just purchased an original for $399 at the Apple Store in their clearance section.  I plan to use the original until the iPad3 is released, which I hope offers more features, like a Thunderbolt port.
