My understanding was that there was also to be a USB port which would open up a whole other world of connectivity.

HDMI out is nice, never understood why they had the VGA output on the first one.. HDMI Adapter works with old/new iPads, iPhone4, and Ipod Touch 4.

Perhaps the dual cores will mean increasing from 256 to 512MB of RAM, which i would guess would be a big boost for web browsing, ibooks and zinio apps.

But yeah, i agree not a huge reason to upgrade.  I was really hoping for a better display and it was have been a good enough reason for most.

I think most folks will wait a year, but i will still order one for hand-me-down reasons.

There is a usb dongle for it, mostly for cameras to connect up to. rumor has certain thumbdrives would also work.

Nowhere near enough improvement/new functionality to have me even consider upgrading.

Likewise.

As regards USB, at least for audio purposes, the current iPad supports USB audio out. I wouldn't assume the 2 would change this.

I'm thinking more like an emitter for remote control purposes.  They make one for the proprietary port but you're limited to one brand whereas USB offers a lot of options.

I have gift certificates to the Apple store (Christmas and birthday), I'll be using them to get an iPad 2.  I held out, not getting the first gen iPad, assuming the 2 would be an improvement.  Was it worth waiting?  Maybe not, but I'll take the improvements, regardless.

I am confused about the USB function of the iPad 2.  Is it full-function, 2-way data or some hybrid device just for power or special applications?

The Apple website lists these items in the box:
  Dock Connector to USB Cable
  10W USB Power Adapter

The Dock Connector to USB Port (dongle) is sold as a solution to upload pictures and video to the iPad, nothing more.. (or not much more)   It's been found to work with USB DACs and certain USB Thumb drives..   The iPad doesn't provide the user with the concept of "disk storage" like a computer would, so even though it's capable of doing more, it's up to an "APP" to provide it.  There are Dock Connectors that have IR repeaters available and there's even a few other.

If you want "storage" there is an iDisk app for those that are Mobileme users and dropbox also has an app.  It's not additional storage but more or less a way to sync to a Mac and PC.

The Dock connector To USB Cable: allows you to charge via the 10W USB power adapter and sync with your Mac or PC.  Sadly USB ports don't provide 10W so a computer won't be able to charge the iPad.

So there are two key different products here.  The cable and power adapter comes with the iPad, the dongle is an extra item sold by Apple.

No prices discussed yet?

I suspect that AT&T has again restrict my tethering (either by connector cord or bluetooth) that would allow my iPhone act a wi-fi hotspot in areas there is no wi-fit around (I travel, sometimes, a lot....and a few too many hotels still charge outrageous $12.95 a day for hi-speed internet service)

So, I use my iPhone in those instances.  For me, it's worth the $15 a month I pay for tethering to AT&T partnered with my laptop. It pays for itself one night a month...and it's good backup if my hi-speed at the office ever goes down.

The front-facing phone completely changes the value equation for me. Assuming that that means I can use it as a videophone.

yes, but if it's like the iPhone 4 you cannot use video very effectively on 3G, but wifi is free game.

I was hoping for the ability to send digital audio out-without having to use the camera connection kit, which is  a PIA. A higher resolution screen would have been nice as well.

Agreed. I think this is an important advance and was what I was waiting for in the 2nd generation.
