While visiting my wife's niece and husband in Chicago this past weekend, they turned me on to a group out of Australia called Wolfmother. They are quite a bit younger than my wife and I, and I was very surprised to hear this heavy metal 70's sounding music coming from their ipod. I've since done a bit more searching and listening to Wolfmother, and just ordered their Cosmic Egg release on vinyl.

Any fans here? It's honestly some of the only new music I've heard in a long time that I had to go out and buy.

I liked their 1st album but haven't heard their second. My son-in-law doesn't like them which surprised me because he likes 70's hard rock and metal.

Some may say they are 'riff rip-off' artists but I did enjoy the first album... Straight up borrowed from all the best. You can pick out Sabbath, Zeppelin, The Cult, AC-DC, Priest, and more all flying by one moment to the next...
Isnt there a little 'bitch session' between Dave Grohl and Lemmy in the new LEMMY movie. I think there might be some disdain from the old rockers towards them for some reason.

Count me as a fan.  The first wolfmother song I heard was 'mind's eye', which I thought at the time sounded like a pink floyd song.  I watched the recent super bowl on tv here in Australia and noticed that a wolfmother song was being played during a flashback montage.  I think the song was 'joker & the thief'.  Both these songs are from their debut self titled album.  About 4 weeks ago, I saw them at an outdoor concert.  The lead singer has an effortless, soaring voice not unlike robert plant.  Great fun and it was surprising how much a couple of thousand jumping people can make the ground shake.  Anyway, if you like what you hear on cosmic egg, I would definitely get their first album too.

The music I was listening to was from their debut album. It appears to only be available in a digital format, so that's why I opted to buy Cosmic Egg since it's available on vinyl.

I have seen some of the comments calling them a "rip off" of AC/DC, Zeppelin, etc. There will always be detractors of most any band, and they're entitled to their opinions, I just don't have to agree with them. 

There is a familiar feel to their music, but I don't feel like I'm listening to music that is just recycled 70's hard rock. It has a freshness and an honesty to it that I am attracted to. And yes, I think the lead singers voice does have a certain "Plant" feel to it, but how is that a bad thing? These guys seem like they love the music they're playing (from what I've seen of their live performances via the web) and if it is intentionally meant to sound like some of the earlier rockers, it's a fitting homage IMHO.

The band essentially broke up between albums, so their first and second albums sound completely different. The vocalist remained (and one other band member, I believe). Their first album is much better and sounds more muddy and '70s-ish; their second album sounds more polished.
