Jasmine LP 2.0SE Phono Stage Upgrades?
« on: 24 Feb 2011, 05:46 pm »
Ok I had to do it, I took my Jasmine apart because I read somewhere
that some cap upgrades would improve the already GOOD sound of this unit.

So to all you guys who know electronic circuits what would you recommend?

Cap type, value, bypass, cost where to get etc.?

I am goind to replace the rca's while I have it open.

The first photos are of the main board

And these are of the power supply

Thanks,
JT

You have probably read this>>http://www.dagogo.com/View-Article.asp?hArticle=28

That is all I have seen discussed. I would be interested in what you will change. But I don't know what the hell I'm doing, I can solder wire and that's it.

If I got the Jasmine I was also going to go this route.

What's the matter Jerry, cabin fever setting in, you have to start taking things apart?!?

I think it was "Gopher" who mentioned Bob from Bob's Devices
http://www.bobsdevices.com/cinemag.htm
has a Jasmine. I wonder if he had done any messing with it???

I talked to a good buddy of Bob's who told me Bob has left it stock.

If I were spinning more vinyl these days, adding Bobs Cinemags to my Jasmine would be towards the top of my list.  As great as my analog is sounding though, I'm not listening enough to justify it.

I'm inclined to leave it stock too. I like the way it sounds just fine.

(For now!)

Yeh I might leave it the way it is, I guess I do have cabin fever Gene LOL

The Rubicon caps are supposed to be pretty good, I dont know about the
MKP's though and they are marked + - 5%

Thanks for the link Bacobits, that will probally give me some idea.

I do not know/understand circuit layouts so I do not know which ones to
change for best performance upgrades.

The electronics under the copper cover probaly can not be messed with,
and I wont.

It looks like the Solens can be swapped out pretty easily and that's probably worth doing because just about any decent cap is better than a solen imhsubjectiveo. In fact there appear to be holes on either side of them to possibly accommadate larger caps (the pic isn't too clear so I can't quite tell).

I've reached the point where I find it's too risky messing with power supplies, and the rest of the board looks good enough quality.

Thanks Wush,

Which ones are the Solens, are they the ones marked MKP?

If so would I use the same value 1.00uf 400vdc?

Reading the articale on Dagogo, I have no clue where the caps would
go. He mainly did the power supply board.

I am no electronic tech, but I can solder unsolder etc. I wish I new someone
local that understands what they are looking at.

The Solens are the MKPs, yes. Best to use the same value. A lower value voltage should be okay like 250v etc, it's not a tube pre right? You would just swap them out and like I said there are holes on either side of those solens to fit large caps.

EDIT: having read more of the article he mentions that the spare holes in front of those 2200uf electrolytics are there to add capacitance, so that's another easy job - just solder another pair of your choice and that are the right size in them and you're all set. Provided that access to under the board isn't hard.
