3BSST2 balanced connections
« on: 24 Feb 2011, 05:22 pm »
Hello,
I'm new here and have this site to be a haven for Bryston owners. My first question is: I have an unbalanced preamp and want to connect it to the balanced inputs of my 3BSST2. I know that the amp does both, but what I want is to use the quality XLR cables I have with some Cardas connectors that I also have.If I set the amp up the amp as balanced and leave the 1v setting in place(as for unbalanced) will that effect anything and still get enough gain? No adverse effects for the amp?
thanks,

Levi

I don't think the 3B has a fully balanced input topology.  Also, If your preamp is unbalanced, then it will sound better if you use RCA to connect it to your 3B.  You can experiment with 1v or 2v settings with regular RCA to see which one you like best.

If you choose to go with an XLR cables and XLR to RCA adapter, you can do it but I doubt that you will hear better sonic compared to RCA.  Bryston designed the amps to sound good RCA or XLR.

However, you can experiment and post your findings here.
