Raving about the OB7-plus
« on: 19 Feb 2011, 04:33 pm »
Just have to say how continually-impressed I am with Danny's OB7-pluses.

I drive them with moderate components (Emotiva UMC-1, Cambridge Audio DAC Magic, Mac Mini with usually lossless compression itunes + Pure Music player, outlaw 770 Amp, N3 center channel, MFW-15 sub).  I use them for both 2-channel and 5.1 HT.

Listened this morning to some "new" CDs I recently bought:
Gershwin by Grofe' (fantastic)
Fitzgerald & Pass...Again
Stompin' at the Savoy - Benny Goodman
Luck in the Valley - Jack Rose
The Blues and the Abstract Truth - Oliver Nelson
Make the Light - Kate Rusby
Time Out 50th anniversary disc 2 - Brubeck
Recently watch the Brubeck and Desmond "Take Five" DVD

I guess I'm in a Jazz mood these days :-). But the speakers can handle anything from bombastic blu-ray through rock and over to old recordings of classical, jazz, blues. Everything is accurate, airy, transparent.

Listening inspired me to write to the forum and rave about the speakers again...

Anyway, if you haven't heard the OB7-pluses this is my encouragement to do so!

Nice! That's cool you like them so much. Do you usually run them "large" for music or small and incorporate the MFW? What are you running as your pre-pro/receiver?

Hi Skeeter99,

The Emotiva UMC-1 is the pre-pro.  It's had lots of birthing pains but in general they seem to be more stable now. Mine still has a couple of problems so I need to send it in for service (when I can part with it).

The UMC-1 has direct mode where it bypasses all processing.  I usually use that for non-bass-y music. When I want the sub I run in stereo mode and the UMC-1 send signal to the sub. I have the mains set as "large" and the sub set to get only 40HZ and lower signals, so it only cuts in for very low HZ sounds.  Not sure if these are the optimal settings or not but it sounds very good for everything I send at it.

Oh that's right, I forgot that was the model of their new processor. That's cool it has those customizable options for playback. I like it when you can do that stuff :)

I am the picture police so I have to ask, do you have any pics you can show us??

Hey Skeeter99, I should have cleaned things up but took a quick photo via my iphone. Will try to do better ones in the future.

Very cool! Those look like the exact same cabinets from the product page on the GR Research site. Interesting idea with making the N3 really wide to get the air space you need. Congrats!

Credit where credit is due - Eric at "eargasm" suggested the cabinets for the center channel be as wide as the TV. He said the audio quality was good, and it increases the WAF due to fitting in a bit more. I had Eric build the cabinet and my son and I did the assembly - pretty fun project.

I actually have a front cloth that matches the color of my wall to really make the speaker blend in (I painted the speaker the same color as the wall as well) but it fell off and I haven't gotten back to installing it yet. I need some glue on the velcro...
