"The Burmese Harp." I haven't seen it since my college days, but have never forgotten it.

Leni Riefenstahl's "The Triumph of the Will," is still considered one of the best documentaries ever made. It still has the power  to frighten you.

And two films out of Hollywood I don't think have been mentioned that are both excellent, "A Walk in the Sun," and "Attack!"

I haven't watched some of them yet but they're all documentaries except for Hitler: Rise of Evil which is a movie.

Secrets of WWII is short mini-series that aired on the History channel a few years ago, which I purchased. The most interesting was on the Enigma machine, which the allies obtained shortly after the war began from Poland. They couldn't read all of the code at first but enough to help them out, especially in North Africa against Rommel. Rommel thought he had a spy in his midst but the British were intercepting his supplies from Europe from breaking the Enigma code. Also the Germans were no where near developing the Atomic bomb, but the allies didn't know that so had to try and disrupt the heavy water production.

The Unknown War was a 14 part series that aired on the History Channel. It is comparable to the World at War, only its from the Russian perspective. My friend obtained the series for me which I get when he returns for a visit.

Restricted Films of WWII is mostly newsreel footage. It's pretty boring to watch! What I learn from that is war is boring, except at the front, and it's a lot of very hard work. 8)

Was it "The Unknown War" that was narrated by Charlton Heston, or some similar luminary?

I saw it, or a similar one, maybe 20 years ago on TV.  Well worth watching.

The Unknown War was narrated by Burt Lancaster.

Thanks!  I couldn't figure out if it was Burt, Kirk, or Charles.  The Russians suffered terribly.

Although many aspects of the drama are now dated, "The Caine Mutiny" is a great vehicle for Bogart, one of his best performances. The subplot, involving the young lieutenant, comes close to ruining the film, however.

Another good film, but again with many dated elements out of the 1950s, is "Mr. Roberts."  The young Jack Lemmon is a hoot in this one.

There was a program on TV last month called "Germany's Last Ace", a 3- or 4-part production about Gunther Rall who passed away about 18 months ago.  It was based on his war-time diaries and included interviews with Allied pilots he fought against.  A fascinating retelling of what he went through in the many theaters where his fighter group was stationed.

He later became a NATO air force general, and good friends with his former enemies.  Shortly before he died in 2009 he attended the EAA Oshkosh fly-in where he participated in an historical forum with a historian (who was seen a lot in the documentary), and the U.S. pilot believed to have shot down Rall late in the war.

Very touching to see these guys reunite and get along so well.

I had wanted to attend Oshkosh for years, and was supremely lucky to attend in 2009 where I met some Tuskeegee Airmen, met a few other WWII allied flight crew members, and got to shake Rall's hand.

If you have ANY interest in WWII history, and the role our parents/grandparents played in it, RUN, do not walk, to the EAA Oshkosh fly-in.   A trip of a lifetime.
