Speaker stands

Don't know if this is the right forum or not, but I need suggestions on 24" speaker stands. I just received a pair of Soliloquy 5.0s. Soliloquy makes a nice stand for these speakers, but at 400 dollars they are too pricey for me. Do it youself is not an option at this time, so I am looking for a stand not to exceed 250 dollars. I would be grateful for any suggestions. TIA

Osiris stands on Audiogon. You should be able to get them for around that price.

I would get Skylan's Reference speaker stands at 24", which I think run $350.

Oops...just realized you said $250, though you said $400 on first read. Maybe you can get them cheaper than the MSRP. Who knows.

I second the Skylans.

It is one of the stands that I suggest to my clients and use my self. With a little sand, shot, or both, it is a good looking and good sounding stand.

I'd try Parts Express (http://www.partsexpress.com) and look for 'high mass metal stands' for under US$100.00. Take 15 minutes putting them together, fill them with sand, and you have great stands (nice looking, too) for $150.00 max with shipping and sand.

Your Soliliquy's will sing

I use the 18" versions of these and they are super.

How important is it that the top plate of the stand be at least as big as the dimensions of the speaker? Can the speaker overlap and still sound good?

imho your okay as long as you have the front baffle of the speaker in front of the top plate (so you can't see the plate).

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I decided to go with chairguy's ideaand get the stands from parts express. I lucked out in that they were on sale for $75 (normally $99)

, plus the fact that they are located only 45 minutes away so I was able to pick them up rather than have them shipped. They are very good looking and definately helped my monitors sound better.

Wow Karnaaj, $75 is a darn good deal on these

My 18 inchers were on sale for $84 a year ago (+ substantial shipping from Springboro, OH to Cali 'cause, as you've found, these are pretty heavy suckers) and I was sure pleased.

Fill 'em with sand (if you haven't already) and put a couple of good blobs (taller than the corner spikes) of Blu-Tak, Mortite or PlastiClay so they are rigidly 'clamped' to the stands and you have some real improvement on the cheap.

I also bought Parts Express constrained layer damping sheets and covered the (underside) bottom of each stand (top and bottom plates) to really eliminate ringing that might interfere with the tunes. You don't see the damping sheets if done on the underside.

Hard to beat the deal with these Parts Express sometimes. They buy containers of stuff from China and we all save big on the direct-made stuff they bring in. Most other places you buy from are so small that they have no economy of scale in costing/pricing.

I'm thinking of picking up those PE stands (would like to check out the Skylan's but they won't respond to my e-mail...), however, the top plate is slightly smaller than the speakers I'm using (Energy ESM-3's at 10 3/8" W x 8 3/4" D, top plate on stands is 8 3/4" x 9 3/4")...would that be a problem either acoustically or with stability? Might look nice, but...not my first (or second) concern. Want good sound the cat can't ruin.

Any help greatly appreciated!

All 3 of the stand-mounted speakers I've used have sat fine on these stands.

Each one weighs over 15 lbs each, so there is plenty of weight holding them down. Most bookshelf speakers are less than 20" tall, remember - so there's not much to get tipsy.

They're great stands, btw, unbeatably priced (tho they've gone up a bit in the last 3 years - not much, tho).

I always build my own. PVC pipe, allthread rods and bolts, lead shot and playsand with MDF plates top and bottom. Painted with whatever, I like Duplicolor's Truckbed Liner Black myself. I'd guess at about $50-60 alltogether. Custom made to fit and heavy as hell, they even look quite good.

PS: I'll second the use of BluTack between the speakers and the stands, it's a great tweek that really helps a lot and is dirt cheap!

The Dayton stands showed up today (less than 24 hours after I placed the order online)...I am VERY impressed!

Not just the shipping, but the stands themselves. Look very nice, very substantial build to them, and I haven't even put any sand in them yet! Thanks for those who recommended them, they truly are first class.

Totally great stands...nothing I've ever seen is remotely as good for anywhere near that money.

Did you buy the high mass ones? They're georgeous - brass accents, great spikes, sand/shot fillable.
