A newbie question regarding dac and amp connections
« on: 26 Jan 2011, 06:12 pm »
Hello all.

i hope my question is posted in the right section.
i am thinking of buying an amp that only has one phono socket input.
I want to use a cd player and a music network player.
If i connected both to a dac, using the two different inputs you can on a dac.
then connected the dac to the amp via the one phono input would that work or be ok?
it is just i do not want to have to disconnect the phono leads from the amp everytime
i change from music player to cd player but have no idea if you can connect
two pieces of hi fi to a dac at the same time.
of cause i would have one turned off while the other was powered on.
thats turned off as in on stand by.

thanks for any advice

Depending on the DAC, what you describe is possible.

Some of them will have an input switcher, so you could change sources that way, others will require that you simply only have one source on at a time.

I have the same setup as your curious about jason. I use a Squeezebox Duet and Piano M1 CD player both running into my Grant Fidelity Tube DAC-09 and my DAC in this case is being used as a pre-amp(or switch selector) and a DAC. Like mcgsxr said above some allow for choosing between several different inputs....what kind are you considering???

Thanks guys

This is the link for the dac i'm thinking of buying as it is within my budget
http://www.mav-audio.com/base/product/tube_magic_d1
i would connect the cd player using the coaxial input and the squeezebox using the optical input.
The amp i intend to buy is this one virtue one2
and the music player is the squeezebox duet (i'm bidding on one right now)

thanks again for the advice and help guys

Good choices all, I couldn't have picked any better myself, as a matter of fact thats all the stuff I picked also. My DAC is identical to the Maverick just a different name silk screened on it and configured slightly different.
 My currrent setup is :
 Virtue Audio TWO.2
 Virtue Audio Piano M1
 Squeezebox DUET
 Grant Fidelity Tube DAC-09
 a lot of assorted JBL's a MP-301 Tube Amp...
I'll steer ya to the budget stuff thats got the best value as that is my specialty--LOL....
Have you thought about cabling yet, Speaker, Interonnects,  including Power Cables-....man you are in for some fun!!!!! At first all that stuff isn't super important just get it all plugged in and working, but as you move forward you'll see how all components including cables add up.........send me a message anytime you have a question that you think is too dumb because I've probably already asked it...LOL :thumb:

With that DAC, you don't even need an amp with a volume control.  You can use the variable outs on the DAC and use its volume control.  Any amp will do.  Up to you.
