For me ,the graphic equalizer in the tape loop would be a solution to adjust out the tonal problems on poorly recorded material. Other than that I have attained amazing results by tweeking the room and speaker position. :banana piano:

Hearing what was recorded on the original recording is what I wish to hear.  Bumping up the bass or treble is defeating the purpose in my opinion.  I think listening to Bryston equipment really lets you hear the musicians intention of what they where trying to accomplish in the studio or soundstage or orchestral hall. If the recording has great bass you will hear it!  No need to mess with perfection or the intentions of the original performance.  Just one persons opinion on this topic.

Nothing butchers the sound like speakers do.

You forgot the sound "engineer" not satisfied with the result of a chain of 3 compressors/limiters and running the master level hot too for added emphasis ......

I completely agree, Nap.  But I was thinking along the lines of what we have control over.  Speakers have exponentially higher distortion than even the worst measuring amps and sources.

Learn to cable, learn to position speakers, learn to tweak and be realistic of your system capability and you will learn that you do not need tone controls.

I couldn't agree more-as long as you keep T Bone Burnett's production out of the mix!! :x

I had a preamp that had a tone control bypass switch.  I guess that would be 2nd best.
