Thanks for the update, Davey. I usually have a record playing while the "on deck' record is soaking. But you're right, it's a time-consuming process.

Pumpkinman brought his steamer to my place last night, we went through a couple of albums I had run through the VPI 16.5, but still had pops.

My Beethoven 9th had at least a dozen pops in first 2 minutes, steamed it, now has one.

Steamed some others with surface noise, it's now 98% gone.

I'm sold on steaming.

What kind of steamers do folks swear by?

I just picked up a Wagner wall paper steamer, but really haven't played with it much.  About $30 on ebay.  I need to find a good brush to use.  Any recommendations?

Hi Gene,
Glad to hear that steaming has worked out for you too.
Re. Steamers - I am still very happy with the one I bought, has done at least 200 LP's now without a hitch.

This looks like the exact same unit I use for $25.

The right angle adapter that allows a cone of steam to be fired vertically downwards is a key feature.

Cheers,
Dave

I know there are many different individual preferences for RCM brushes.
I did trial a few including Discwasher amongst others.
Where I got to on this is outlined in page 12 of my little guide HERE

I've tried the Mofi and Disc Doctor microfiber brushes as well as the Audio Intelligent brushes http://shop.audiointelligent.com/product.sc?productId=19&categoryId=2 I settled on the AI brushes. They are excellent for use with steaming (although a little on the expensive side).

Dave - nice guide, I'm printing it out.

Laura - at $30 that's not bad, Bill has me sold on the VPI brush at $40. I've been using the Nitty Gritty Nylon Bristle Brush, which is good for slightly to moderatly dirty records, but not stiff enough for the 'bad characters'.
