In this video she is playing piano on a beach; how appropriate for the topic:

Jim,

I could only watch about 20 seconds of Public Enemy video before the rapping gave me a headache. No Rap  on my desert island.

Are there hot chicks in bikinis that we need to be concerned about having enough dance tunes on this island?   If indeed I could probably put up with lady Gaga or at least Michael Franti. With out the dancing girls, I could settle for Nora Jones, Pearl Jam and (tropical island) Marley, any of them! Add in Buffet and Morphine.

Another one of these impossible lists, where I'm supposed to parse my entire collection, all genres, and pick only 5 bands.

Here goes...

King Crimson
Pain of Salvation
Genesis - only up to Wind and Wuthering
PFM
Gentle Giant

Since the list is supposed to be 'Bands', I feel that I am also justified in bringing along the following, since they are not in any way, shape or form a band:

Igor Stravinsky
Krzysztof Penderecki
György Ligeti
Edgard Varese
Samuel Barber

PFM??? Can you guys give me a good one to start with? Thanks
I saw Gentle Giant at the Tower Theater in Phila. in center of row 1...was fabulous. :thumb:

bogiedr

Pat Metheny
Miles/Coltrane
Springsteen
King Crimson
Greatful Dead

Agisthos

Iron Maiden
David Bowie
Alice In Chains
Dead Can Dance
The Doors

Stu Pitt

Metallica
Black Sabbath - the original and only Black Sabbath
Tool
Jimi Hendrix - how's he not in anyone's list yet?
Led Zeppelin - anyone mention these guys yet?

If it was 6, there'd be a Pearl Jam/Nirvana/Stone Temple Pilots brawl.  Pearl Jam would probably get the nod due to a larger catalog.

jimdgoulding

Too tuff for me to say except for Kind of Blue, for sure.

hum4god

Joanna Newsom
Radiohead
Beirut
Man Man
Balkan Beat Box

Not familiar with PFM?

One of the best progressive bands, ever. Arguably the best from Italy (along with Banco).

Just start at the beginning of their catalog.

Storia di un Minuto
Per un Amico
L'isola di Nienti

are all brilliant.

The English versions of Per un Amico and L'isola di Niente (Photos of Ghosts and The World Became the World) are also worth getting, even though some of the material is repeated, the arrangements are different.

Live in the USA (also known as Cook) is a great live performance.

Chocolate Kings is their last "great" release. Jet Lag is quite good and is more in a fusion vein.

Nothing after that is worth getting, IMO, other than a couple of live releases.

If you're not familiar with Italian prog, there's a truly amazing amount of incredible music waiting for you. In many people's opinion, Italian prog is among the best ever produced. PFM, Banco, Le Orme and some others easily rival the best from England.
