Quality of internet radio?
« on: 6 Jan 2011, 03:15 pm »
Hello!

Does 320 KBPS MP3 internet radio have good sound quality in a resolving stereo system? Is a subscription based alternative better than using Shoutcast or I tunes?

I am planning on running a mini toslink to toslink from my Mac to Dac to connect internet radio to my system.

Thank You!

Not sure I can directly answer your question, I have not found many with bitrates that high.

I can say that tuning into a local 128 kbps station does not provide rewarding quality, but it does come through fine.

This would depend to a large extent on the kbps and the quality of your DAC. I have found that 128 kbps through a quality DAC sounds quite good.

I have yet to find an internet channel that will match the dynamics of my downloaded library therefore I rarely bother listening to it. But the same holds true also for the 78 music channel on DirecTv or 85 music channels on my large C-Band dish. So with all this variety at my fingertips, I rarely stray from my own hard drive library personally, ymmv.  :thumb:
