Nels,
Thanks.  One more follow-up; could you explain "sounds better" between the Macbook and the Mini?

"Sounds better" was kind of vague--sorry.

First is a very noticeable reduction of the noise floor, adding to a sense of increased dynamics.

Clarity is noticeably improved.

Bass may be tighter, not so sure on this-

I bought 8GB Crucial branded memory for my 2010 Mac Mini for around $100 shipped from Newegg. Works like a charm. There are lots of other less expensive options but users are reporting very high defect rates with the less expensive memory.

How about this one for an '09 Mini?:

Jim,

I bought mine from OWC for about $100 and it comes with a lifetime guarantee, is CL-7 instead of 9 like most, and you can also send your old memory back for credit if you wish -- as long as it meets certain requirements.

I don't know what newegg offers, so this may all be moot, but wanted to let you know about this option.

So this is DEFINITELY the right memory for a 2009 Mac Mini?  Just want to double-check before I purchase same.  My (headless) Mini is sluggish on a number of tasks, so I thought this would speed it up a bit.  Any possible improvement in sound quality would be a bonus.

Thanks, -dB

Just an FYI on the install for your 2009 mini. You might want to check out the how-to video at otherworld computing before placing your order. Just make sure you're comfortable with the process since it's a little intimidating.

Thanks for the tip.  OWC video was easy to understand.  I feel totally comfortable working this memory upgrade.  Looking forward to getting a bit more speed.....soon!

Guys, is anyone interested in a separate thread involving using Pure Music, an 8-channel firewire DAC, and some plug-ins to create a fully active speaker system?

I have a DEQX but just bought an '09 Mac Mini and TC Konnekt 48 to replace it in a 3 (soon to be 4) way system.

I'll be learning as I go but it might be helpful to others if they are looking to do the same / similar thing.
