95dyna,
Thanks for the tip on the dealer.  I just checked out his website.  San Antonio is about a 5 hour drive but I do get down there periodically.  I will definitely check it out next time I am there.
Thanks,
Tony

Give Galen a call or send him an email.  He's great to talk to and very responsive.

Yeah, Texas is funny that way.  You can drive for two days in a straight line and not leave the state :thumb:.

James,

Has the number of dealers dropped in recent years? My first pair of Brystons came out of Las Vegas but now looking at your link we don't have a dealer in the state.

Yes we revamped our dealer list a few months ago to try and get rid of the 'in name only' Bryston dealers.

James is IQ in VA a recent addition?  I was in there a few month back (for the first and only time) and did not see any Bryston.  They did have some nice gear.  If it is a recent edition they do have some nice sound rooms to carry a decent amount of a given line.

I just looked at their website a minute ago and it does not (at least yet) list Bryston.

At the end of the day, there are great dealers, and there are bad dealers.  But dealers aren't the only ones - there are great customers, and there are bad customers.

My local Bryston guy is great - Audiocomm in Greenwich, CT.  I stopped in one day inquiring about a B60.  I didn't have the money to buy a new one, but I was looking into one on Audiogon.  I up front about it from the start, and they really helped me out a lot.  They didn't have one to demo, but the salesman used to own one, so he knew how it compared to what they had on the floor.  He let me listen for as long as I wanted, and told me what to expect with the B60.  I feel bad that I don't like what their selection of stuff I can afford, and can't afford what I like.  But when I can afford it, I'll buy from them, without hesitation.

James -

Do dealers usually stock Bryston cables and/or can I order through them?

Don't mean to answer for James but I don't think dealers have them.  Best way I've found is to call up there and a very nice lady will take your order and CC number.  I think they ship on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Dealers do not stock the cables and that is why we offer them online.  You can order them through any Bryston dealer though if that's easier for you. I don't think they are exotic enough for dealers to consider.

Stu;

As an aside if you do call directly to Bryston and use a CC the CC company charges a "Transaction Fee", or something like that for international orders.  It is not insignificant either.  At any rate my CC company does.

I bought my first Brystons 8 years ago here in Vegas from a local dealer, but they no longer exist. So I also bought by newest Brystons from a Dealer in Los Angeles. Vegas is great for audio for four days in January but the rest of the year it's a desert.

Got my badge for CES  :D

Correct. There's a couple of high end dealers here, but they don't have BRYSTON.

Correct. CES is where it's at. Hope to see ya there.

re: dealer in Dallas

I have had only absolutely great experiences with the Bryston dealer in Dallas. I have bought several pieces of equipment over the years, including my Thiel speakers, and last year my 4bsst2. The owner is friendly, most accomodating, and provides excellent service.

Hi James,

I remember advising you about a year and a half ago to go after Hi Fi House and their 4 locations in southeat PA and northern Delaware.  I see they're back in the fold albeit too late for my business.  They are a well respected A/V dealer with a huge footprint in one of the largest markets in the US (Philly).  This should serve both Bryston and its customers well.

I'm just curious--how many folks really believe the retail model for audio is going to survive?

We've got two places in Minneapolis for high end audio, but I simply don't see how they will survive now that the home building craze has run its course...

Seems to me that unless you are located in a very high rent district, a stand alone business will have a harder and harder time covering their overhead and still make a buck...

so how much longer before all high end audio is a) purchased at shows, or b) via the internet?

Here's a dilemma that imperils the current retail model.  I have recently auditioned a pair of Revel Ultima Studio2's.  I could only find one dealer withing a 3 hour drive that had them for demo.  I drove two hours, spent 2 hours listening then drove 2 hours home.  I have a local dealer who is primarily a home theatre contractor and doesn't carry anything for demo unless he has it in house waiting to go to a job site.  He has a "cash and carry" pricing policy that he says he recognizes how little value he is adding to the transaction.  He will sell me the speakers for $12K US.  The dealer where I auditioned will go $800.00 off list which is $15.2K.  As much as I would like to support the dealer who carries the product can I justify $3,200.00 to use his showroom for 2 hours?  The model has to change and I think the manufacturers have to put more skin in the game and work with their dealers to that end.  Perhaps I'm off base with that suggestion and if so I feel certain James will straighten me out :thumb:.

The real problem is that you come home with that new CD and it sounds like crap, and you switch to headphones and it still sounds like crap, then you go to your friend's place where it still sounds the same. Then you load it in soundforge and it also looks like crap.

Then you buy a new CD just to repeat the experience, and eventually you find out that the selection of properly recorded and mastered material to feed your expensive system is very small.

And it kinda puts things in perspective and make you think that maybe you should give up and get an iPod dock instead or something.

A well recorded CD on a high-end audio system sounds great. 16/44.1 can provide excellent quality. But as you say many only sound good in my wifes car with her talking on the cell phone as cover. Some genre's are better than others. The general buying public often wants the volume and they will put up with compression to get it. On the hi-res blu ray of Tom Petty's "Mojo" there is a statement that reads something like "This is recorded at a level that captures all music and therefore if you want to listen TO it louder TURN THE VOLUME UP".
