Your Audiophile Thrift Shop Finds under $50
« on: 8 Dec 2010, 06:31 am »
This weekend I happened upon a nice, solid (thump, thump, knock on wood) small set of Teac speakers with 4" Kevlar woofers for $7 - perfect for my computer set-up to play tunes while I browse. (Pretty good sound out of these babies!)

So I thought, why not start a thread here so you can tell us what you've found under 50 bucks at thrift shops?

Mariusz,  You set the bar pretty high or maybe I should say pretty low.  Hard to beat $0.00 unless someone actually pays you to haul stuff away.

Just part of the job.
11 thousands apartments in NYC.
And sporadically we inspect "moth ball" apartments with some interesting items left behind.
Fortunately, no one from my co-workers knows or cares about tubes, turntables and other hifi gear.

Not audiophile, but I was still proud of it.  They were asking $45 and I talked them down to $25.  These sell for about $150 new. Tested with an iphone and everything worked.

I have Swans computer speakers and didn't really need those, so later that day I traded that for a set of these

Buried in a CL ad I see a mention of "old JBL speakers" so I email the guy and we talk on the phone, 20 minutes later they are in my car for $50, I was like a kid on Christmas morning. These are nicest speakers I have ever owned and they are used daily...

The only good find at our local thrift was an Oppo DVD player for $10.

But, if garage sales count....
$20 for Sennheiser HD580 headphones
$10 for a Rotel RCD-970 CD player
$5 for a Proceed PRE PreAmp (amazingly enough, as I was looking at it, the seller told me that Proceed was a Mark Levinson company which also made very expensive equipment...so he knew the value more or less. I asked him how much, and he said $5. The $5 bill jumped right out of my wallet, I didn't even have to open it.)

I used to work next door to a Salvation Army store and could see what was coming in.  Scored a Dynaco Stereo 70 and PAS pre, with original tubes for $25.  Another rummage sale grabbed a Scott 299C for a similar price.  A MINT Klipsch Heresy pair for $40.

Pinnacle Digital Sub 150 for $35. The sub has a 12" woofer with a 150w plate amp. I only use it for movies where it adds a nice rumble when needed, the sub is too woolly for music.

This old Knightkit KB-85 had mostly Mullards (although the EL37s had been replaced with 6L6GCs) - It matches up nicely with most of the best of 1962- Marantz and McKintosh.
Cost $10 at a junk store.
Gary Dodd did a little upgrade including some Sonicaps for me.  It turned out so nice, I bought another one to match.

Just purchased a Pioneer belt drive turntable. The model number is PL514 and the table is from 1978 approximately. It has a heavy base, good feet, large stable platter and reasonable arm. The unit sold for 130.00 in 78. I got it for 20.50. I am not exaggerating when I say that this player could give any budget player today a run for the money. It is that good. Perhaps the modern budget players are over priced. I have owned Music Hall 2.2 and Rega P2 and this table is hands down better than either of them. With my experience, I would recommend all vinyl re-entry guys consider a vintage deck first.
