Amarra Jr. vs. Pure Vinyl
« on: 25 Nov 2010, 01:23 pm »
    The title indicates the question.
Does anybody have ant experience comparing the two?
I am running Pure Vinyl in strictly the Pure Music mode.  Great sound, but only when I run it in "Hog Mode", which in a supreme twist of fate brings mw right back to putting the tone arm down on the record and having no remote flexibility to skip songs.
I run standard red book CDs, so i am just curious as to how the sound compares, and the capabilities of remote control on the Amarra.

                                                                         Thank You

ZLS,

I have both Pure Music & Amarra mini; I haven't used Amarra mini much for the past few months since I got PM.  I run PM in hog mode and still can 'track forward' using either Remote on my Ipad or "Prontotunes" on my Pronto remote....

I'm actually having trouble getting Amarra mini to play my high rez tracks (24/88 or 24/96) since I've changed to the Tranq. Sig. DAC.

Best,

Randy

Hey Z,

I've got both PV and Amarra and prefer the former as well whether in Hog Mode or not. I, too, can control PV via the Remote app from an iPhone and iPad. What kind of remote are you using?

I've got both and prefer PV/PM by a large margin.

It's more stable and far more feature-rich.

Sound quality is close, but I'd give nod to PV/PM if pushed.

Notes:

1. PV/PM plays much more reliably if you disable its close coupling to iTunes.

2. Ayrewave is quickly becoming a 'true contender.' Beta versions are currently free.

Another vote here for PM.  I've got it (latest iteration) and Amarra 1.2.  Didn't bother to upgrade Amarra.  BTW, Ayre Wave sounds promising; it's made by the same fellow who wrote "Play," which is a pretty good player app as well.  Of course, YMMV.  Good luck in your search.  Cordially,

Thank you Gentlemen, one and all.
I am sticking with Pure Vinyl.
I am screen sharing my iMac with my Macbook, but am switching my music server to a modified Mac Mini.

As always, it is an education reading the Apple Core.

What does it mean regarding Pure Music to "disable it's close coupling with iTunes"?

In the MUSIC SERVER preferences, uncheck all "app coupling" options, e.g., UPDATE POSITION and MANUALLY ADJUSTABLE.

Rob has made great strides in making these things work, but I find that things run more stably and efficiently without them. See pp. 14-15 in the PM manual.

Of course, this concept can be taken even further, using LESS IS MORE. This mode may be even better, but I haven't yet tried it.
