Listening Impressions

If you couldn't already tell, I love these speakers :)

1)What is the weight of each speaker ?

Just guessing from the pair that I built, I'd say about 80 to 90 pounds.

Quote
2) What the thickness of the front and side baffle?

A 1.5" thick front baffle for the P-Audio driver is recommended and at least a 1/5" round over on the back side. I used 3/4" solid Ash for side panels, but if building another pair, I'd go a little thicker.

3)Is there any advantage in having the front and side panels  flushed against each other ?I do not intend to have grill ?

This speaker is unique in that the tweeter is using the woofer as a wave guide so there is little energy outside the profile of the woofer for the tweeter output. So the sides sticking forward of the front baffle a little has no effect on that frequency range. The woofers longer wavelengths are just that. Longer wavelengths are not so effected by a little bump in the road. They wrap right around them.

4) If the front panel is strong enough, is there any advantage in making the area around the PA speaker more rounded and less surface area ?

I rounded mine off just to minimize that area, but I think it made little difference. It did however make it hard to fold all of the material for the grill around that highly rounded area without it bunching up. A rounded top like Tyson used would make grill making a lot easier.

Update on the sound - I've found that the Sonicap Platinums have really, really, really smoothed out the sound.  So much so, that I have cut the foam in the tweeter throat in half again!  Now, it's only 1 inch long, and barely enough to cover the shortest part of the tweeter throat.  It's still an over all positive tweak, but more of a "finesse" tweak than a "sledgehammer" tweak that I started out with.  IMO, the upgrade of Platinums in the crossover is probably a bigger improvement than the foam, so prioritize accordingly....

:banghead: I really hate hearing this about the platinums, they are so dang expensive.  :violin:

True, but they are worth it!  I bought 4 for bypass in my speaker crossover, then I bought another 4 for bypassing the output caps on my amp.  Then I bought 2 more for the input caps on my amps!!

I have to agree.  When I replaced all of the caps in my AV123 X speakers with Sonicaps the jump in clarity was very cool.  But adding platinums really showed how good those tweeters could sound.  Those stock caps were just awful in comparison.

Platinums and No Rez both aren't crazy expensive but just a bit more expensive then you might think they should be.   That is until you hear the results.  Then you understand as you pick your jaw up off the floor.

Yes, very nice build. I too like your choice of veneers and I agree paper backed veneers work great.

Made a couple of more upgrades with the Auri-T teflon caps and updated listening impressions on the first page.  I'll post it below for reference as well:

Line Level High Pass Filter
After a while, I decided to build a line level high pass filter between my preamp and amp, so that my amp would not get any signals below 60hz.  The .01uf values I had already with the Auri-T's was perfect for this.  Got some male and female RCA's and some extra wire and built them several days ago.  Inserted them in the system and I was.... underwhelmed.  Almost no difference in sound, at least none that I could detect.  Of course, I listen at only moderate levels and my amps are pretty strong, so I guess it's not "that" surprising.

Auri-T Midrange Cap Bypass
Well, I still had an extra 2 Auri-T's and nothing to do with them.  So I figured "what the hell", and soldered them into the V2 crossovers across the 20uF midrange cap.  Now THIS was a nice improvement!  I don't know why it would make this much difference, but in my case it really does clear up the midrange quite a bit, particularly the lower mids.  Even the bass seems cleaner and "faster", probably because of that lower mid/upper bass cleaned presentation.  Of course there's still a long burn in process ahead of me, but right now I'm very happy!

I finally found some decent quality caps with a rating of less than .01uF, the Cardas Golden Ratio caps, they have some that are .0068uF which will let me raise the crossover point to 80 or 90hz.  We'll see if that helps.

I took a look at my caps and realized the Auri-T's are actually .015uf and that puts the crossover point at 40hz, probably way too low to have much effect.  I've got the .0068uf cardas caps on order, which should let me have a 90hz crossover point.

Hi Tyson
Do you need ventilation holes for the box housing the SA amp ?
Does it run very hot to touch after 1 to 2 hrs of use ?

I don't have them in boxes yet, but they do run hot so I will be building ventilation holes in my boxes when I get around to making them.

Hi kp93300 and all Audio Circle members.
Here are pictures of the SA-1 in my two pairs of V2.
All my SA-1 are attached to the V2 enclosure, I left intentionally one side open, it's where you see my finger.
If your SA-1 are in a seperate box, I would recommend some cooling slots at top and bottom on two sides. 2 X 20cm. (1" X 8") If you have any curious or exploring children around the house that can poke their fingers in the holes, make them smaller, but increase the number of slots.
With a Vietnamese ambiant tempreature of around 30C+ in the house, they do get hot if you drive them hard, but never to a point where you can't touch them.
I hope that help.
Don't forget to post some pictures.

guy13, have you built a super v?   If not it seems that would be a "revealing" progression.  soooooo, get building.  Ah yes, call Danny and get ordering first. :thumb:

Hi Bear and all Audio Circle members.
Up to now, I only have built one V1, one V2 and one V2 sub.
Before I go ahead and build a Super V1, I have to sell some of the V2, I have to get some more money... My piggy bank is on a money diet now.
How would you put in words the difference between the V1 and V1 super?
Is Danny's crossover the same for both models?
