Who do you like on trumpet?

My favorite are Al Hirt, also Harry Hames and Louis Armstrong. Al Hirt always impress me every time I listen him, great musician.
I like many others too, except Davis.

OBS. I mean say Harry James.

Cuong Vu is another interesting modern trumpeter who has played on many jazz albums including Pat Metheny's Speaking of Now.

I just got the latest Blue Note email, anyone familiar with this work;

Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has just completed recording his Blue Note debut with labelmate Jason Moran as co-producer (due to be released in Spring 2011.). The album features Akinmusire's fiery young quintet with saxophonist Walter Smith III, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Justin Brown.

I had a late start to the jazz scene, but someone I liked early on and still keep an eye out for is Terrance Blanchard. Of course those mentioned above go without saying.

Let me add Claudio Roditi, whose lone album I have, Brazilliance X4 (2009) is as good Brazilian jazz as you'll ever hear. I'm keeping my eye's out for more albums from this guy.

Hi folks

An interesting CD by Arturo Sandoval is Trumpet Evolution. On this CD he pays tribute to many great trumpet players by emulating their styles. It is an amazing display of virtuosity as he emulates early players like Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong through the different era's of jazz to the present day with the likes of Wynton Marsalis. He even throws in a few classical players as well.
I still find Miles Davis to be my favourite from his era and Wynton Marsalis stands out for me among the modern players.

Another up&comer at age 38, Joe Gransden, whose sole album I own, Close To My Heart (2009), is pretty lowkey and straight ahead but still well done. He can also sing very very well.

Another lone album I have from a trumpeter, Mystery Man (1992) by Marvin Stamm. Wish I had more from ole Marvin as he can blow a mean horn.

Nicholas Payton, son of football icon Walter Payton, needs to be mentioned. I have quite a few of his albums, From This Moment (1994), Nick@Nite(1999), Dear Louis (2001), and my favorite album Sonic Trance (2003) where he totally fusions his horn out.

Neil Hefti the composer - played trumpet.
I think we might have left out Red Rodney, Blue Mitchell, Ira Sullivan, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew and Howard McGhee. And historical figures like Nick LaRocca, Muggsy Spanier and Clyde McCoy. How about the guys who played in big bands like Bix Biderbeck or Cat Anderson. Lots of great players over the years. BTW, that video of Maynard-Al Hurt was amazing, w/Herbie and Ron Carter?
