Someone else who is a really excellent trumpeter (and trombonist) but doesn't get much respect at all is Louie Prima.

Sean Jones? There's a name I'm not familiar with - thanks.I went up to the Princeton Record Exchange a few weeks ago with Tom, another member here, and we were talking about (you guessed it) trumpet players. He has a hard time listening to Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie. I found that interesting as Dizzy is one of my faves. Dizzy played like Roy at the start of his career. Roy was his teacher. It's the aggressive up front style and sound that puts Tom off. I think if you listen to some later Dizzy stuff like New Faces, you get a whole other feel. Maybe helping to invent bop with Bird and friends caused the evolution. Change is inevitable.Dizzy in turn taught Miles how to play. When Miles first went to NY there was no way he could keep up with Bird. But he got through it and man did he change things. Dizzy also gave Lee Morgan his start. Lee played in his big band. On Lee's first Blue Note album he's holding one of Dizzy's trumpets - with a bent horn. I met Dizzy in Seattle in '74. He was playing a gig at some bar/club. I was stranded there for awhile. Anyway, I saw a poster and went to the club. Dizzy came in before the gig and sat at the bar 2 seats from me. They served him a meal and we talked a bit. He was one of the nicest most generous guys I ever met. I told him I used to play a little and he offered me an audition in LA later that month. I couldn't believe it. I declined cause I wasn't that good, but I guess that's the kind of person he was. neoBill Chase & Jerry Van Blair - thanks. I've got some catching up to do.
