Grateful Dead Warner Bros Box Set issue
« on: 4 Nov 2010, 01:47 pm »
Hi
I got my box set and it is generally awsome.  I did have an issue with the copy of "Workingmans Dead" though.  On the track "Dire Wolf" there was this strange "oscillation" that at first I thought was a speed issue with my TT.  It was nly this trach and did not hear it on any other LPs I put on and knew well.  I called Dead.net and they are sending out another copy.  Very good service!  I am just wondering if anyone else has heard this or if I just got a bad pressing.

Kris-

I ordered the box set and am waiting for delivery.  So, thanks for the info in your post. :o  I'll be listening for any problems.

I find GD customer service top notch when it comes to replacing defective product. When a jewel case arrived cracked and damaged a CD, I called them right away and they sent a replacement disk, no questions asked/no hassle.

BTW, I'm glad they have reissued the LPs with original mastering of Anthem and Aoxomoxoa.  I never liked the remastered version of Aoxomoxoa, I thought they edited too much out/cleaned too much up.  Am also surprised to see an original mix since they claimed these mix tapes were lost.

Have you listened to all LPs in the set?  I've heard the original mix of Anthem is different from the subsequent pressings and reissues.  Have you noticed any differences?

I do not have a history with GD vinyl and I have just gotten into vinyl altogether.  So I cannot anwser your question.  I  am working throught the box with a critical ear now.  This track was VERY obvious.  No gloden ear needed.

I have listened to that side at least 3 times and I can't recall hearing it.  Where in the song do you hear it and can you describe what it sounds like?

The Anthem and Axomoxoa mixes are the original mixes, not the remixed versions which I believe appeared on Beyond Description.  At one point they did think that the original Aox mix was lost forever but they did find the master tapes.

The records sound fantastic.  This is the best they have ever sounded.  Workingman's Dead is stunning.

Just listen to Jerrys voice in Dire Wolf.  If it sounds fine it must be an isolated error.  It was super wavy like you put your finger on the platter and slowed it down.

Did not hear any funny business on playback of my set. Might be an isolated issue.

No problems here either.  We compared the new box to the original WB & WB7 Green label (first stamper) pressings as well as first stamper white label promos.  Virtually identical, if not better in a few cases.  This box set is as good as analog gets if you like the Dead.  Full review in issue 32, highly recommended.
