Oldest piece of audio gear you currently use

I am using a Pioneer SX980 as my primary amplifier for headphones. Built in 1979 and a beauty. One of the best receivers I have ever heard and competes with my 2500 Decware separates. Powerful and has detail and transparency. Eventually I will have it overhauled.

Hey!

Try eBay. I think some of these vintage Marantz receivers can go for hefty prices there. And get ready for the shipping cost, these old receivers are heavy.

I'm using some gray glass GE 6SN7s that were made in 1951. Not a complete piece of gear, but certainly a very valuable piece of the puzzle.

Julius Futterman built me a direct drive (OTL) headphone amp for my Stax 10X esl headphones in 1979. Ain't much to look at, but it has given me glorious sound for over 30 years.

An Apt Holman preamp from the late 70's.

IIRC The owners or service manual states, it seems like with pride, that light on the front is an LED, even forgoing the acronym and using "light emitting diode". Fancy stuff

Is this about the time when LEDs came about?

A Grundig 3192 w/original Telefunken & Valvo tubes. A great FM tuner and very good fidelity. It's actually Stereo only in that you can plug in a turntable and/or tape deck and play through right & left internal or external speakers but the FM is strictly glorious mono.

I have a DBX/3BX range expander from back in the 70's. It still works, but it stays switched out most of the time now. It adds background swishing noises, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Here is a 9.9 out of 10 Marantz 140 power amp that I just picked up yesterday. It appears as new, with one little mark on the plastic power meter lens frame (lower middle). It functions as new, however, the power meters needed to be calibrated (gain at full, source as mono, set meter level control screw to matching high value).

My Paradigms are so efficient that the meters barely move. I'm sure if I had some power sucking ARs on it, it would be more fun. The meters look cool, anyway.

This is also from 1975, making it about 36 years old.

Here is my new mint Marantz 3300 preamp. It's pretty much mark free, and seems to work well.

I was most fortunate to have the patients to wait for the right pieces to come along. If you are going to get a vintage piece, it should be as flawless as possible. Let the other guy buy the beat-up stuff.

I did send my 140 in to Mike Zuccaro for a once over as the left channel had a corroded contact in the speaker turn on relay, and I wanted him to check bias and give it the once over. Well worth it as he also commented on the spectacular build of this 75 watt RMS/channel amp.
