Apple TV as Music Server - How to Prevent Content Deletion

I bought a 160 gb ATV for a music server. I do not want to stream the content.

I have now loaded the music (whew!) in apple lossless. I first loaded the content on my desktop computer, and used automatic sync to transfer to the ATV.

Now I need to delete much of the music from the desktop as it has consumed the hard drive.

After reading some forums, I am terrified the content will be erased on the ATV. I have checked the box "Never Sync with ATV", but I will occasionally need to upload new music from my desktop as I purchase CD's. I am concerned that if I select "Custom Sync" that it will go and erase all my ATV content. I am not terribly Itunes savvy so you should know with any responses.

Please help me avoid this disaster.
Thanks
Chris

The Apple TV is just a device and you should never consider it a primary location to store music.   If you rent or purchase any content via the Apple TV it can remove existing content to make room for the rented or purchased media.

I would recommend you get an external drive to hold the music, and point iTunes to that which it can then sync to an Apple TV.   Best yet get two external drives so you can actually back up your music.

I have the original CD's for most all of this music. I'll consider backing it up, but that doesn't really answer my question.

There must be an easy way to command the ATV to no longer have to mirror the music inventory on a 2nd computer, but still allow me to add or delete music as I want to.

Thanks,
chris

Unfortunately, no, there isn't. Like the poster above mentioned, it's not meant to be a primary storage device. Consider it an iPod with Internet connectivity and video out. That's what it essentially is. It can only be sync'd with a single machine if you want to add/delete to its existing song list. Syncing it with a second machine will wipe out all existing content. Just like an iPod.

I think you can synch multiple libraries, but maybe not.  I've seen an add a library option somewhere on mine.  Maybe it'll synch one, and stream others?
