Changed all ICs in vinyl playback to AudioQuest, added a TWL 7+ to amp, and even ran a small drain wire from turntable bearing nut to ground nut on turntable wiring block. I think that last wire did more than anything, a .5 cent fix. Now listening to see what I got.

Doug Watkins - Soulnik (1960)

While Mr. Watkins is a well known bassist, for this release as the front man, he instead sports a cello! But not in place of a bass, which is deftly executed by Herman Wright, but instead as a lead instrument, all pizzicato. Along with cello, bass, piano, and drums, Yusef Lateef plays flute and oboe. I really dig this cello sound in jazz. And the track with oboe added makes for very interesting and enjoyable music.

And to help me enjoy today's music, a little refreshment I picked up while visiting family in MI last week:

Not familiar with Mr. Watkins rockad, but will check him out.

How’s the SQ on that RockaD? I’ve found that the SQ on the multi-disc jazz sets I’ve bought to be compressed to hell and back. Unlistenable. And those are Byrd’s sessions and not Watkin’s, no? (Loves me some Kenny Burrell.)

This is nice and lovely with a recently released remastered version (which I don’t have).

LesterSleepsIn - I had not noticed any bad mastering/remastering in these at all, but have not listened super critically.

The "Transition" Sessions name comes from Tom Wilson's record company, Transition Records, in Boston. He had produced and recorded the three albums contained within these two discs and sold them to Blue Note (1958). Two of the albums, Bird's Eye View (1955) and Byrd Blows On Beacon Hill (1956), were led by Byrd, and the third, Watkins At Large (1956), by Watkins. Byrd and Watkins play on all three albums.

These reissues were produced by Michael Cuscuna and mastered in 24-bit by Ron McMaster. (With a name like McMASTER, you'd think he'd be an expert MASTERer!

)
