If you don't have this one then you need to get it.

Samples: Joe Lovano - Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard

DISC 1 personnel:
Joe Lovano (soprano, tenor & C melody saxophones); Tom Harrell (trumpet, flugelhorn); Anthony Cox (bass); Billy Hart (drums, cymbals).

DISC 2 personnel: Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Christian McBride (bass); Lewis Nash (drums, cymbals).

Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on March 12, 1994 (Disc 1) and January 20 & 22, 1995 (Disc 2).

Reviews:
Down Beat (4/95, p.48) - 5 Stars (out of 5) - "...extraordinary. The Harrell/Cox/Hart band...is loosely conceived, bringing out Lovano's freewheeling side....The Miller band...showcases an infrequently revealed Lovano: the modern-minded saxophonist who has bebop in his heart..."

JazzTimes (5/96, p.67) - "...Impressive in scope and execution, LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD clearly shows Lovano's rare ability to balance discipline and freedom onstage. Simply put, the man plays."

Option (7-8/96, p.115) - "...On this double CD, featuring Lovano with two different quartets, the saxophonist proves he's one of the most flexible, commanding, post-bop horn players to emerge in the last decade..."

Samples: John McLaughlin - After the Rain

Personnel: John McLaughlin (guitar); Joey DeFrancesco (Hammond B-3 organ); Elvin Jones (drums).

Down Beat (11/95, p.46) - 4.5 Stars - Very Good/Excellent - "...McLaughlin plays with a dazzling sense of time and resourcefulness, ordering the notes just so in testimony to the acuity of his musical reasoning....there's a certain piety to his playing, measured and unobtrusive, that appears to emanate from deep inside..."

Samples: George Benson / Al Jarreau - Givin' It Up

Reviews:
JazzTimes (p.91) - "There's plenty of Jarreau's world-famous vocal tricks, which include tongue-clicking, chest-beating and plenty of crazed scatting."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.95) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Benson's fretboard dexterity and melodic invention reveal a musical sensibility fully intact."
