While at jtsnead's today heard Clark Terry for 1st time, 'Portraits' on the Chesky label, pretty sure the opening track was a flugelhorn, which I like. So came home and put on;

A Night in Tunisia- Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers (Philips).

Recorded in Tokyo direct to disc and released on Dutch Philips, this sonofagun is fabulous!  In addition to the title track there is Moanin and Blues March.  The title track is 15+ minutes.  The sound is stupendous and the playing is wonderful!  I have owned this since the early 80's (it was recorded in 1979) but hadn't listened to it in 20 years (been in storage).  My favorite Messengers' recordings are Free For All (Blue Note) and Live at Keystone 3 (Concord Jazz) and this one, definitely.  Don't know if this is available but I urge you fans to find out.  Man, it is superb!!

jtsnead introduced me to it yesterday, and his was a great sounding audiophile pressing, mine is the original Verve pressing I picked up for $5 this morning, bit of surface noise, but playable.

Lotus Flower- Woody Shaw (Enja).  Beg, borrow, or steal this if you can.  Trombonist Steve Turre lays out on Shaw's "Rahsaan's Run" soes Shaw and Mulgrew Miller can burn thru the atmosphere (no joke)!  And what follows, too, but with Turre.

I have that Patricia Barber LP and love it.  Bought it after seeing her perform with the same group at the Bellevue WA jazz festival a couple years ago.  They played Witchcraft and it was so swingin' in a reserved sort of way.  Very cool.  That tune is on this LP.
