Hi All - I'm supposed to introduce myself.  My name is Scott and I live in Southern California.  I am a avid Maggie fan and I have a pair of 1.7's and a pair of 1.6QR's.  I repackaged one of my 1.6QR's and turned it sideways as a center channel.  I drive them with an Emotiva XPS-2 amp.  This is a serious wall of sound.  I use Roon to source my music.  Nice to be here.

Out of curiosity, how do you have them wired? (The XPA-2 is a 2 channel amp, am I correct?)

Looking back at the 3.6R reviews, I am very tempted to recruit some help to bring my 23 year old pair up from the basement and end their 15-year hiatus. Curiosity about how they sound compared to the LRS's currently in the system is starting to get the better of me...

So my question for the Maggie crowd: Is there anything that I should look for, do or not do when bringing these out of semi-retirement? I hope I didn't tear the ribbon(s) either packing them or in transport (attached the ribbon protector strips, closed the boxes slowly and taped them securely, but they were moved in the back of a pickup.... fingers crossed...)

Other than that, is there anything else that I should look out for?

Next time you’re within 75 miles of St Paul, MN, stop by Magnepan’s hq/production facility for a tour. I did, and it sure was interesting. So cool to see 1st hand the way their speakers are made. Wish I would’ve kept my .7s, but only had room for one pair of speakers.

I revived my MG-IIIs after 25 years in storage. Powered by a 20 watt SET, they sounded very good; except the voice coil wire in one panel was buzzing. I suppose I could reglue it but the wire in other areas is likely to come lose and I don't want to reglue it all. After the novelty wears off I'll post them in the Karma Circle.

The 3.6R are very easy to upgrade to active crossovers. You might take a look on the Hollis Audio circle for a discussion on this speaker.

As you had the ribbon protector strips on ... your ribbons should be fine.  So the only (bad!) thing you might discover ... is that wires have started to come loose from the mylar - ie. the dreaded 'de-lam'.   

If you decide you love their sound ... there's a whole lot of things you can do, to make them sound better.

For a 3.6R check, use a light and look at the sock at the planar wiring to see if you see any lifting of the wire for the bass and midrange wiring glued to the mylar.  If you see delamination of the wire, Magnepan sells repair kits with the adhesives to reattach them.  If they look fine and no rattling when playing music, then they are working correctly.  Just be very careful removing the ribbon tweeter protector and go slowly.

Without the external passive crossover box attached, you can check the bass panel wiring resistance, as it is directly connected to the bass terminals on the rear of the speaker.  The midrange and ribbon tweeter have an internal crossover so you cannot check them directly with the treble terminals.
