what would be a decent headphone amp for my Sennheiser HD600.  I want to spend less than $500 as I don't use them too often.

my last amp had a phono output, but the new one does not.  Miss them for late night listening.

Take some time and visit head-fi.com

There's a classified section over there with a lot of things being sold. You should find something that meets your needs at that price point. I built myself a Mini-Max for my 600's and couldn't be happier. They usually sell about $500 new, and somewhat cheaper used, or you could build it (and have some fun) for about $200-250.

I have a highly modded X-Cans V2 with X-PSU that I might be willing to part with, since I have a custom tube amp being built for me.  The 600's really thrive with the X-Cans and XPSU because of the stout power supply, the control of the solid state output, and the musicality of the tubed input stage.

Checkout the Little Dot MKIII. $200 new & tubes are cheap. Sounds wonderful with the Hd580s & HD650s. Head-Fi.org.

I have a Headroom Max (2004 model) which I replaced with an Eddie Current Zana Deux. I've just been too lazy to put it up for sale on Head-Fi. I would sell it for $500.

Off topic but I had a Zana Deux, what a great amp.  It was also a great preamp for the First Watt F1 I had at the time.

I use an Edirol UA-5 as the dac and phone amp from the digital out from a highly modded Toshiba SD-3950 transport. Fantastic sound.

It will depend on your source - You may want to consider a portable headphone amp ... especially if you are using a portable source like ipod ...

Get a used HA-160...they are a good match for the 600/650's.
