Those JanZen's aren't dipoles like most other ESL's.  It would be intersting to know what absorption materials are used in those cabinets to absorb the electrotats' backwave energy.  Since ESL diaphragms are exceedingly low-mass, it follows that they must therefore be exceedingly sensitive to rebounding cabinet resonances.   However, I've read rave reviews about the JanZen's so the resonances are apparently tamed.  I'm wondering how they pulled it off... that is; how they tamped down the cabinet resonances or isolated the diaphragms from them.  Harold Beveridge did something similar; although his cabinets were necessarily huge.

That's an interesting question. The only Janszen hybrid with which I'm familiar is something like 50 years old at this point, so I don't think it's much of a guide to current construction practices! The only enclosed speakers I know of that solve this problem do so by using heroic construction, e.g., the Magicos, and have prices and masses to match.

I wouldn't say David JansZen's construction is heroic or even exotic, but he builds a very solid cabinet.  The outside cabinet is a full 1" think high quality MDF.  The ESL panels and each woofer are sealed in their own sub-enclosures and damped (I didn't ask about the materials for damping).  David did show me the inner box for the ESL panels and how that allows the backside to be managed.  I'm not a manufacturer or tweaker so I'm more interested in the sound than the construction, but these are well thought out and I know from talking to David that he sweats out these details.  I can attest that I am not hearing even a hint of cabinet reasonances, even at solid volumes.   I suspect I will get driver limits with the JansZens before the cabinet complains.  The front baffle is also 2 1/2" solid hardwood.  Pretty to look at and a contributor to the solid build.

Cabinet buzz was one area where I raised an eyebrow when I heard the Sanders 10c system at RMAF last year.  When he pushed the system hard with some organ music he went a little too far and there was clear cabinet ring from his transmission line bass enclosure.   Very nice sounding system otherwise, and it should be for $13k.

I wasn't really thinking about the cabinet walls themselves vibrating but, rather, back-waves rebounding off the box walls and back to the diaphragm.  It seems to me that cavity resonances would exist even in a perfectly rigid cabinet and these would have to be dampened in some way or you would hear resulting vibrations in the diaphragm.

Shouldn't judge a speaker by one experience and using one type of music.  Given that caveat, the Acoustat 1+1's with a Linn Sondek front end and a Spectral power and pre on a couple of choral recordings of mine (one was Mark Levinson, the other a Proprius and I still have them) just slayed me where I stood.  As close to heavenly as I can imagine.  Seriously beautiful playback.  Thanks.  I've said that before and will likely say it again cause it is indelibly burnt into my soul.  Don't care if they couldn't rock like Rockport's.  Would have bought them, too, but I moved to the country and into a modified barn as my listening room.  So, I bought some Model Three's instead with a Counterpoint SA5 and a Precision Fidelty tube pre and a pair of Kenwood LO7 150w monoblocks's.  Those I could afford.  When I bought the Kenwood's they were $350 a piece at Pacific Stereo.  I had Fulton IC's in those days.  Anybody else ever used those?  I think they may have started the whole IC and PC trend.

I'm really enjoying the Ampzilla's. Picked them up just before the holiday and they're working really well with the Carver Amazing. I may have to try them with a different preamp however. The Ampzilla has exceptional bass when hooked-up to a SS pre I have kicking around, but with the Supratek, it's just a tad softer.

The problem to ME is the cabinets, TRUE planars don't have BOXES and that's MY personal choice.

PS: No matter how much the box cost's, a box is a box plain and simple, with electrostatics ALWAYS think outside the box.

Attention there are two JLs F-112 Fanthom subwoofers in this system, for my friend Jocelyn 24hz is not low enough with the subs it goes down to 14hz that is HIS CHOICE they are his speakers BUT for me i would not have subs.
