Please tell me that I sent you an email response. Honestly, life has been a little crazy lately, but that's nothing unique. The VAC is as healthy as ever - thanks to a new (but very old) set of front end tubes (in fact, the Pass X350 is gone - sold it this week (in less than 5 minutes )). There have been several changes, but some didn't stick. I've been trying to nail down network audio and I'm finally happy, thanks to the arrival of a new device today - the Bryston BDP-1 (which is feeding an Audio Research DAC7). It's outstanding - listening to Corea, Clarke & White right now (in glorious 24/96). I'll get it working with the NAS tomorrow - for now, it's just being fed from USB thumb drives. I also finally added a clock to the room - lower right (displaying 10:16:43).
Reading the clock is more nerdy than clever – it displays the time in BCD. Each column is a digit of the time and the value of each column is simply the sum of its illuminated LEDs. The row values (from bottom to top) are 1, 2, 4 & 8. At first blush, it may seem like a convoluted way to observe the time, but it's really rather simple and efficient. Besides, the patterns entertain weirdos (which I can't deny being). I needed something that I could read from 16', or more, without the aid of glasses – and I didn't want just a large digital clock. My first thought was a nixie tube clock, but when I found this, I couldn't resist. That Dawnrazor character launched me down the network audio path, although it wasn't what he actually encouraged me to do. Setting up a computer for audio in my bedroom system hooked me on the concept of abandoning the physical media. Once I built up a significant library, I fell in love with the convenience of being able to queue up whatever struck my fancy at the moment. It's especially convenient since all of the media (except concert DVDs/BluRays) is in the house instead of the listening room. Now, I don't have to decide what I want to hear before heading to the cave.For whiz-bang coolness, the SONOS is hard to beat. The subscription service of Pandora doesn't sound too bad and it's an excellent way to find 'new' music to buy. The Squeezebox Touch is a great little device, so I've read. The Bryston player is in an entirely different league, however. Steer clear of the Marantz NA-7001 if gapless playback is important to you – my understanding is that it isn't alone in that deficiency (and not one professional reviewer bothered to mention it (nor did the manufacturer)). Once you dip your foot in this pool, you'll want to dive into it.I hear you about Amazon - I'm an Amazon junkie (addicted to a few other Internet sources for music too).
There's something I want to address if I may.Everyone knows Peter Gunn and some of you may have had some squabbles with him over the years, others had the opposite experience.I would like the welcome him to the Planar Circle and I'd appreciate it if everyone else could do the same.This is a different place (my wife would agree with that one!) and a different atmosphere.He has a lot to offer and agree or disagree, when all is said and done it's just stereo stuff so isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things.This Circle is what you make of it and you've all helped make it a good one.Thank you.
Steve,Part of the reason why some of us migrated away from the AA was to get away from the "Peter Gunn" nonsense. (I had another (larger) issue as well, but that's another subject.) Hopefully, the much more active moderation on this forum/circle will alleviate any issues in that direction.Anyways, he does bring a decent knowledge/experience of panel repair techniques (certainly valuable information.) Unfortunately, it's a double-edged sword with all of the other issues that come along with his participation.Personally, I think "Peter Gunn" should have his own forum/circle/whatever....(as many of the Industry types do here.) That way he could moderate with impunity and not be bothered by pesky questions and skeptics who highlight inconvenient things. I have to give JohnR props because that format seems to work well on AC.Good luck,Dave.
