Sorry, you got that wrong.  After winning the 1971 24 hours of LeMans, the Porsche factory entered in the Can-Am series in 1972 with two 917-10s.  George Follmer won the series that year, after he stepped in for an injured Mark Donohue.  Donohue completely dominated the series in 1973, with an updated 917-30.  McLaren had already withdrawn at the end of the previous year because they couldn't compete with the turbo Porsches, and instead focused their attention on F1 and the Indy 500.  It's because of Donohue's racing achievements that I eventually started racing myself.  So, it's move over McLaren M8F.

yes, but the M8F's of the day were only making ~750HP wereas this particular model is putting out over 1000...and would therefore "run" with 917s back in the day.

But M8Fs didn't have 1000 hp back then.  Even if they did have that much hp, the 917-30 was putting out around 1100-1150 hp in race mode, and upwards of 1500 hp in practice and qualifying trim.
