iPod Touch Spectrum Analyzer ???
« on: 25 Sep 2010, 07:37 pm »
I have a Touch on the way. Would love to be able to do basic spectrum analysis for live sound applications when my band sets up. Spotted an app for the Touch that looks like it would do the job for $29 (does not account for the quality of the built in mic, which is an obvious limitation).

To make this work I would need what, Pink noise on a CD or downloaded to an iPod to run through the board? Suggestions where to get the test noise (pink noise?)?

Comments welcome. Thanks, Kent

You may find "Sub Shredder" and "db meter" also useful.
There are few apps with pink tone generator.

Or

Use old, good test CD.

this looks really sweet if it really is plug and play.
"Octave and 1/3 octave spectral analysis"  I take this to mean it only provides 1/3 octave spacing....would expect a few more readings per octave.  I hope I am wrong cause I'd buy it in a minute.  We need someone to test one of these.  :D

after further reading looks like the FFT mode would give a finer reading.

I also see our own Pez from AC wrote a quick blurb at the app store review.  "great stuff. but remember $20 is just the beginning."  Pez, did you write anymore about this here on AC?

Heres a free signal generator. I downloaded and it appears to do the basics... http://www.burninwave.com/generator_dl.htm

I did a quick search on the Android market. There are a bunch spectrum analyzers and generators. Ummm. Now if I could just get the USB-OTG to work with my Icicle USB mic preamp and figure out how to route that to the RTA. Anyone want to create an app?

I'd be nice to know how accurate all (some of) these apps are.  Sitting in your chair taking a rta and sending it to a computer looks really cool.

I’ve been using a very simple RTA app for my Droid X.

I am guessing the only limiting factor is - iPod's build in "mike".

Just got this back from dig6

Yes, AudioTools is fully iPhone 4 compatible, including the proper mic compensation networks
Will probably download it tonight if I have enough itunes credits.

I think that both applications listed can be calibrated with any mic. So the issue is getting your iPod into an environment with a calibrated source to do the calibration.

Got my Touch today. I'm about ready to download an app. My application is grenades rather than sniper fire, so even if the mic is off I can probably receive value from the app (speaker set up for live band performances). Nice if it can help with the home system, but that's icing on the cake.

EDIT - Can't find a third octave calibration on the app (studio6). But I think this feature is shown for the app in the first link I posted.

This is a great demo of studiosix. Gets into iPhone mic issues. No mention if Touch is the same...

Bought the app. Looks good. Is there a way to trim volume for internal mic? Sent from new touch.
EDIT - found mic trim in the app.
