Anyone tried this power supply, eh, thingy?
« on: 15 Sep 2010, 08:25 pm »
Hi!

Have anyone anything to say about this?
Link

I'm thinking of using it to my squeezebox reciever!

I built a linear transformer, but it broke today and I'm not to keen on mending it!

/M

Edit: This is my not so beutiful LM317-trafo. It gets very hot and doesn't put out any amps at all, though allways at the right voltage. Ideas?

Haven't tried it, but you're probably better off contacting Paul Hynes (who has a Circle here at AC) since he seems to actually support his products before and after the sale.

I've made that my self, and after at short glimpse at Paul's stuff I can say that I don't have those money.

My LM317-junk cost me near to nothing, but hey - it's not working. Therefor I wonder about that in the link I posted.

The regulator in the link you posted is not what you want. Current is too low. It requires an additional separate transformer. There is no case and no heatsinking.

If you are using an SB3 or Touch you really need 5 volts at 2 amps.

This power supply is complete for $10.00 plus shipping. You will need to change the connector, but that is not too hard.

If you are using a DUET receiver, you need 9 volts. Parts Express has a good supply for under $30.00

Case, trafo and heatsink I can fix.

It's the technical I suck at ;)

Anyhow, where do I find this "Parts Express"?

Yes, I am.

Is this something I can use with a trafo, or is this something completely different? :#

Parts Express power supply

Sorry, it is under $20.00, not 30.

It is complete except for DC cable to the DUET Receiver.

I managed to get a linear power supply to use with a Classic SB3, but it has the wrong tip.  I noticed you said it was easy to change - any hints on how to get that done?

Cut the end off and solder on the correct sized connector. Check the voltage and polarity of the wires to make sure they are correct.

Easy if you have a DMM and soldering skills, that is.

I can handle a soldering iron, but have never seen connectors for sale.  Everything seems to be made with pre-moulded connectors, so even cutting one of an existing supply seems pointless.

Just an FYI (not to hijack), I have a used Parts Express Power supply for sale that had been modified to output the 5v needed for the Touch.  PM for info..

Thanks guys,

Thanks.  Tried Farnell here in Singapore, but they don't carry those parts from Switchcraft.  Will have to try the local wholesale mall when I get a chance.

I have now decided. I will go for the LM17s with CRC prefilter, shottky diodes and nice oscon's as capacitors.

Any tip on improving this more? I'll be using the schematics called "Adjustable Regulator with Improved Ripple Rejection" in this datasheet, page 14.

Just got a used Duet, came with everything except the power cord and plug for the receiver.

The directions talk about an 'adapter', can someone explain what that is, better yet post a pic of one, since it's not pictured in the documentation, here's what it says;

"Fit the adapter onto the AC adapter plug of the receiver"

And what would be the best after market PS for it, the same ones mentioned in this thread, or......?

I got this one:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=120-536%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20&FTR=120-536&CFID=24256478&CFTOKEN=42329450
with this adapter set:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=120-537
Pretty easy to setup, you pick the adapter that fits and stick it on the end of the power cord so the markings line up (+ ones), works great.
PM me if you need help setting it up Gene!!

Thanks Ed, I'd seen the PS recommended in the past, but never saw the adapter set mentioned with a link to it.  :thumb:

For what it's worth, I bought that adapter set and none fit the Duet receiver correctly.

Perhaps they vary?
