Detroit Lons Were Robbed - WTF
« on: 12 Sep 2010, 10:21 pm »
Even as a Bears fan, I don't agree with that call.   I know this is a new rule, but it boggles my mind how that is not a catch and a touch down. The Lions receiver clearly had control of the ball, touched both feet in the end zone before he put the ball on the ground (in an attempt to get up).  It appeared to me that he intentionally released the ball as he got up and did not drop it. The rule for a catch used to revolve around having control.  If you had control, and touched both feet in bounds then you had a touch down.   Even though I am a Bears fan, I think the Lions should have been credited with a touch down.  No joy in an un-deserved win like this.  My heart goes out to the Detroit fans who sure could have used a win.

I'm very upset by the call...he came down with both feet and the ball in both hands, had enough control to switch the ball to his right hand (palming it), took a step, then went down bracing his body with his left arm.  His knee went down and he put the ball on the turf.  How is this not obvious posession of the ball?

I think it's obvious posession and the closest ref on the field signaled TD when it occurred.  The next play could have been a pass interference and they didn't call it, so they didn't even feel the need for a 'makeup' call which they'll do at times.

The Lions were definitely robbed; terrible call!  The thing that is amazing is the announcers are saying they got it right...

acording to the rule...blah, blah, blah.  The Lions got robbed.  He had control.  The NFL needs to understand a one hand can be control.

Hey I'm a Bears fan but I have to agree.  Detroit won the game because that should have been a TD.  The rule is bad for the game and should be changed.  That was a great catch and I'm sorry for Lions fans. Also sorry to see Stafford hurt.  He is an awesome young QB and I hope he is not seriously hurt.

Stafford injury is huge...and it's not his first shoulder injury....so now you have to wonder about his durability.

So are the Bears a good pressure defense or were the Lions that bad?  I was surprised by how well the Bears withstood the Lions rush and how the Lions, after a solid preseason from the starting OL, looked overmatched.  The TE Scheffler, missing his assignment on Briggs was ridiculous...straight to the QB at the 2 yard line.

The referee just sounds like he's making excuses to be honest.

After reading the new rule several times I still don't understand the intent.  To me, the "process of catching the ball" ended when the receiver had two feet on the ground and control of the ball.  I could understand if the receiver was juggling the ball, but he had a firm grip on it.

The amazing thing is you can "break the plane" then lose possession and it's a touchdown????

So, who has the NFL decided will win the Superbowl this year?

I don't have a dog in the fight but I agree, Detroit was robbed.

To make it even worse they let the Saints have it in the Super Bowl with that 2 point conversion, which I thought was the right call, but then take it away from Detroit.

If things weren't bad enough for Detroit already they have the stupid zebra's pile on, what a disgrace.

I think yesterday's game will force the league to re-evaluate the rule and make a change.  Although I disagree with the rule, he technically did not score (at least according to the idiotic rule).  The Lions' fans have a right to be PO'd about the rule but they should be more angry at the way their team played yesterday.  If Stafford is out a long time, they are in serious trouble.  It's a shame because he is an excellent QB.  Forget the crap about him being "fragile".  Anyone who takes a violent hit and has a 290lb Julius Peppers fall directly on their shoulder is "fragile".  He deserves better protection and I hope the guy is not seriously hurt.

Also, the Bears outplayed the Lions all day and if not for a couple turnovers and bone-headed calls (that goal-line play at the end of the half) should have blown the Lions out.  The Bears finally have a pass rush and Cutler seems to have found his mojo.  Next week's game in Dallas will be a true test.  Hopefully (as a Bear's fan) Dallas will continue to play poorly as they did last night!

Cheers,

J

The Bears' offense made their team look better than they really are.  Martz' offense is amazing, but piling up yards and scoring are two different things.  I'm impressed with a lot of things the Bears did, though.  With Stafford in, they clearly win that game even with the BS TD -takeaway at the end.  The Bears pinned the Lions back in their own zone the entire second half and still couldn't score.  Kudos to the Bears for getting their QB some protection against a good DL, though.  Their receivers are junk, though...they might be the fastest WR pair around...but wow, they were in the wrong places way too often.

And Stafford was hit had once and injured.  QBs get hit hard quite a bit.  The ratio of big hits he's taken to injuries is not the best.  Peppers isn't going to be blocked on every play, he's one of the best.  Sacks will happen.  Blindside sacks are killer, though.

Bob, it's too bad about Stafford.   I disagree about him being fragile.  That was a tough blindside hit by a monster of a man, Peppers.  Also, the chop of his arm made me cringe.  Any QB not named Rothlesberger would have been hurt, most likely.

As a Chicago fan, it was a frustrating game.  The Bears dominated in every area except the score.  They had several chances but poor redzone performance - 0/4 - and turnovers cost them scoring chances.  Forte had a career game receiving and Aromashodu looked good for most of the day, and with one bonehead exception, Cutler played well.  The other receivers (especially Hester) have a long way to go.  Turnovers were a killer - 1 int and 4 fumbles for the Bears.

We'll see if this year's Bears are a bad team or a team that played sloppy because they did not respect their opponent.  The Lions are one of the worst teams in the league and, despite a pathetic pre-season, I expected the Bears to walk all over Detroit.  I don't know any Bears' fans who feel good about this win.

Lastly, if losing a couple games (or more!) is what it takes to get Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo out of this town, then I'm sorry the Bears won.  These guys need to go, ASAP.

That was a call when a little 'judgment' would have been appropriate.

The idea of the rule is to prevent catches in the endzone that are knocked loose with ground contact being called a score. The intent is good, but if a guy already has two feet down with clear possession, falls and drops it...that should be a score. The rule should be consistant with the other 'ground contact' rules in the game. They need to fine-tune the rule.

that is correct because when 'breaking the plane' control has already been estabished.
