If you haven't heard Grip, Inc.,
the albums "The Power of Inner Strength" and "Nemesis" are both awesome.
Grip has "Dave Lombardo" of Slayer on drums. (clean vocals).

Iced Earth, "Dark Saga". (clean vocals).

Sadus, "A Vision of Misery".  Steve DiGiorgio(amazing) on bass. (Vocals might not be clean enough for you, but not too bad).

Dark Tranquility, "Damage Done" and "Character" (somewhere between singing and growling).

Black Tide, "Light From Above". Straight old school metal from some young kids.  The singer was about 15 when this was recorded.  His voice hadn't even changed. (clean vocals)

Trivium, "Ascendency" (mixed clean vocals with rough vocals).

It is hard to recommend without knowing more about deep you are into metal.  There is a ton of metal from the 80s that is fantastic.  I am assuming you don't need recommendations for things like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Saxon, Judas Priest, WASP, DIO, Metal Church, Krocus, etc.

How heavy you want? You could try Death Angel, Biohazard, Sepultura, etc.

Black Sabbath's 1st and Master of Reality are the highwater marks to me. No BS cheat with compression. Back in the day, you played heavy or stayed home and played with yourself.

I'll second Motorhead. I may have missed it, but, I didn't see anyone mention Porcupine Tree.

And for the somewhat funny side, there's always Lawnmower Deth & S.O.D.

If you want to take it to its (il)logical conclusion, you should be looking into Industrial/Noise. Ministry, Throbbing Gristle, etc.

I guess it's all hairsplitting... In the end, it all comes down to Whitehouse anyway.

Thought I'd revive this thread.  Just finished listening to Mastodon's "Crack the Skye" which got me through rush hour traffic.  Excellent CD!  Thank God for Metal.

Crack the Skye is my favorite Mastodon album since Remission.

Been listening to a lot of The Crown and Gojira lately.

Grabbed an oldie but goodie for rush hour today, Judas Priest, "Sreaming for Vengeance".  I think it's their finest album.  Has anyone noticed "The Hellion" is featured in the new Honda minivan commercial?  Never thought a minivan commercial could be kinda cool......

I've been listening to some of the bands I thought I couldn't tolerate (vocally) lately as I've grown accustomed to the vocals somewhat.  But only in small doses.

I've been listening to:
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (have Sacrament too but haven't gotten into it.  I learned to tolerate his vocals)
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper  (I really dislike his vocals, but the guitar is awesome)
In Flames - mostly early/mid career albums, but the newer stuff is ok too.
Mastodon is ok, but I traded their albums away a while back.

Just checked it out.  Might be up your alley Josh.  Has some growl + clean male and female vocals.  Reminds me of Nightwish with hints of Therion and Killswitch Engage.  Not really my cuppa tea but good nonetheless.  Thanks Rob!

I found some Enter Shikari stuff on youtube and I'm loving it - but I can only handle screaming in small doses...

I've really been enjoying the "family" of German and Nordic metal bands.  Most of 'em are a mixture of old school musicians working with a generation of rockers for whom metal never went away.  Guys like Magnus Karlsson have really greated a resurgence of great albums.  While it's just a one-off, Karlsson's teaming with Mark Boals for Codex is one of the best albums I've heard in years.  It's really cool to see Tony Harnell and Michael Kiske involved in so many great projects, too.  For quite awhile there was great stuff out there that I didn't know existed:  Beta Ray, Westworld, Starbreaker (with Magnus Karlsson), Kiske/Summerville, Edguy, Avantasia, etc.
