If you have not tried Pandora.com it is an awesome way to find new music you will like.
Pandora streams audio to your PC.  You create a radio station or stations by seeding them with music you like.
Pandora figures out similar music based upon your initial list.  You can then vote for songs you like and it will slowly adjust even better to your preferences.

Seed a station with a band you think you might like.  Someone recently played me a "Control Denied" cd.  I was interested in "Control Denied" because Chuck Schuldiner(the guitarist of Death) plays on it.  Chuck(rip) was an amazing guitarist, but "Death" has a vocal style that is very hard to take.  However, "Control Denied" had a different vocal style and I liked it.  I seeded Pandora with "Control Denied" and then I quickly discovered "Primal Fear" which I also liked.

Are you interested in brand new Metal bands or just metal that is new to you?
How fast/extreme do you like your metal?

You can get lists of bands by genre from Wikipedia.  Here is a thrash band list, eg.

So I have been under the impression that Audiophiles don't like anything too close to metal, it(standard Audiophile selection) was all old school music/new age/classical nothing close to the average radio station....

Mostly because the recordings are not very good, they are missing the "Audiophile clean recording" stamp. Anyway, due to this I was never interested in listening seriously to my music the way my husband does, and always felt like an outcast haha.

Nice to know there are others out there who can appreciate the "noise" for what it truly is, music!!

hmmm, I can't figure out if this is really awesome or creepy, its like the demon possessed chick from "Exorcism of Emily Rose" on steroids! Leave it to a Swedish chick to be able to manage the vocals though  :D

I can never understand how the "singers" can growl like that and then be able to talk or sing in a normal voice afterwards. Aren't they ripping out their vocal cords?

I don't know, I've tried to figure out the whole headbanging thing too...everytime I've attempted that I end up with a sore neck....don't know how they do it for hours!!

I'm with you guys, I don't get the death metal, screamer vocals thing. Some of the compositions and playing are pretty awesome but when they break into the whole cookie monster thing I lose interest really quick.

Tell you what though, this one that Chris linked to (Kamelot) is pretty darned good.  :thumb:

One more....KAMELOT...

Looks like I'll be placing another order at Amazon  :green:

No screams.  Just bad-ass music and amazing voices.   Good ole Kamelot teamed up with Simone Simmons

Epica (her band) might actually be worth looking into too. Love finding new stuff :)

Sirenia is similar....

The leather vest with no shirt really ties the Metal together.

Slayer is metal to end all metal, I highly recommend South of Heaven & Seasons of the Abyss.
1. Its the extremely melodic driving rhythms in the background that sets them a bit apart, most most hard metal bands are very unmelodious which puts me off.
2. The guys can really play.
3. Generally way above average recordings.
4. They're just plain f!@king awesome!  :drums: :guitar:

Another GREAT album is a Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) project. Probot! Awesome old-school metal album.

Good topic, Josh! Muwhahaha!   I will try to keep my suggestions in the non-growly vocal range.

I feel I must admonish all who count themselves both audiophiles AND metalheads (rare people for sure) to please get yourself some CDs from The Champs a.k.a. The Fucking Champs.  Just do it.  Don't like growly vocals?  Well no problem, there's no vocals at all! :)  Their multi-tracked guitar version of "Air On A G-String" is one of the most beautiful things ever.

I'm sure you've heard of them, but if not I would put Blind Guardian on the top of your list, Josh.  I'm partial to "Nightfall In Middle Earth" myself, but they're all mostly good.

Jag Panzer "Mechanized Warfare"

Sanctuary   :D  Ah, the memories!

You might dig Evergrey.  No growls, nice and rhythmic.  A little too melodramatic for me but YMMV.

Maybe also Corrosion of Conformity.  A little growly but not too bad.

Check out Fate's Warning.  There newer stuff is not too awfully heavy but very interesting.  The earlier years are super rhythmic and technical.  They were Dream Theater's biggest influence.  Speaking of DT, did I hear the Mike Portnoy left the band yesterday?

Corrosion Of Conformity "Blind" is awesome. I re-listened to that awhile ago after many years and was amazed at how great it sounds.

Ok, so I put "The Champs" into Pandora and I get a 60s rock band famous for the songs, Tequila and La Cucaracha.  Too funny.  I had to enter "The F**cking Champs".  Unfortunately, Pandora will not play a particular song on request, so I haven't heard "Air on a G string".  However, I heard two "Champs" songs.  Not heavy enough for me.  Then I seeded "Air on a G string".  The first 3 songs were really slow instrumentals that I down-voted.  However, then I got a tasty 20 second morsel from Krisiun and then something from Necrodemon that was pretty cool.  It would seem that if you seed Pandora with an instrumental, then you will only get instrumentals.  I got Dweezil Zappa playing a song similar to Van Halen's Eruption, then more painfully slow instrumentals.  I had to delete the station.

Dead by april is an awesome band. I like how the lead singer changes his voice, from clean to growls...amazing!
