I'm in a metal mood

So I'm in another metal mood. Except I need some more material to listen to. I really don't like cookie monster vocals. For example, I really start groovin to Lamb of God until he starts to sing and then I can help but cracking up laughing at them....they can't be serious.

So what is some good metal that is more clean vocals or at least usage of growls is limited to crescendos?

That was my reaction to them too.

I can't stand hip hop / rap or whatever it's called, but Linkin Park does a good job fusing it with metal. I didn't think much of Meteora when I first heard it but it sure grew on me.

That all depends on how you define metal. Some say Black Sabbath was the beginning of metal. For me, the defining line from hard rock to metal began with Judas Priest- Unleashed in the East in '79.

I share your opinion on cookie monster vocals. From the more recent metal I've heard Judas Priest is the only band that still sings.

Agreed. Judas Priest gets it.

Metal Works '73 - '93 has some of the best metal ever recorded.

I would also add Slipknot to the list, Drowning Pool is pretty good, I also like Sevendust but haven't had a chance to listen to too much of their music.

Slipknot and Disturbed by far are 2 of my favorite bands for vocals/metal sound...of course to the point, in comparison to Lamb of God they are probably considered alternative rock not metal.

Korn always works, but their sound is probably fairly unique compared to most "metal" bands.

I also really like A Perfect Circle (Weak and Powerless was one of their hits), Breaking Benjamin, Flyleaf, 12 Stones (Paul McCoy, guest vocalist on "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence"), Apocalyptica (which in my opinion is metal with a twist...similar to Liquid Tension or Metallica with the Orchestras)

There are a few others, I usually find new artists by listening to Pandora and creating stations by artists I like. If you create a Lamb of God station or GWAR station chances are you will find new artists you like

The thing I like about Slipknot, Flyleaf, Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, and I believe Korn, they have a few acoustic songs, which are just awesome to listen to if you enjoy their regular music!

Chances are there are heavy metal groups in other parts of the world that are less growling (or not so monotone) then the bands here in the US. Rammstein comes to mind, Tracktor Bowling, Kamelot, Charon are a couple that I've heard but am not super familiar with.

Check out Opeth if you don't know them already. The singer has the best Growl out there and a beautiful singing voice as well. Unlike alot of hardcore where the growl is monotonous, Opeth's uses pitch and inflection to make it more interesting. And the music is much more interesting than most other metal out now. Their best overall album I'd say is Blackwater Park.

All That Remains-I don't have anything recent of theirs, but I enjoy This Calling, The Weak Willed, and Six
August Burns Red-Redemption, An American Dream, Marianas Trench
Devil Driver-End of the Line

These bands all do feature the scream/growl, but it's not monotonous and there is generally normal vocals mixed in throughout.

For some heavier stuff, I also really enjoy Zyklon. Another group would be Emperor, who's a great black metal band. Listen to anything off of In the Nightside Eclispe for a taste of their sound.

Forgot about them, one of my favorite bands and a great live show! I like their earlier stuff best though. A few more of my favorites:

Thanks for some of the suggestions. I am a bit of a metal snob, or rather when it comes to metal I am pretty picky, so its likely a lot of the stuff I could like doesn't exist.

I like Opeth and In Flames in small doses. In both cases the music is good but the vocals are tiring. Actually, I could listen to LOG if I was drinking heavily.

I like Pantera's vocals, but not too many metal vocalists pull off the screaming as well.

No offense but I am not a big fan of alternative metal with some exceptions, although I used to like some of it. I love A Perfect Circle and Tool, but really don't care for Flyleaf, Sevendust, Godsmack, Shinedown, Seether, etc. I can't really put my finger on it, but they just sound cookie cutter to me. I like some of Breaking Benjamin, a few songs from Korn and a couple from Slipknot's first. Mudvayne is so-so to me.

I've heard of As I Lay Dying and All That Remains, but I haven't listened to them. I did try ShadowFall and didn't care for it.

P.S. Opeth's Damnation is a great album. Its not hard at all, its a dark mood rock album with signing throughout.

Cynic - Traced in Air
Technical metal masterpiece!

Some limited growls, but mostly clean vocals. I'm not a fan of growls either, but they fit so well on this.

Aghora - Formless
Another great technical metal release with beautiful female vocals.
