My VR 2's are Wrapped!
« on: 5 Sep 2010, 03:45 am »
I'm in the midst of a bathroom remodel, and the dust from new sheetrock and tile and marble installation is incredible, and seems to travel all over the house.  I wrapped my speakers in a thin (3 mil) plastic, fairly tightly, to keep the dust out of them.  It seems to be working.  My question is in regards to using them that way.  I'm not sure if I can hear any difference in the sound, maybe a hint of a lessoned high end, but other than that, they sound great.  I'm wondering if I'm harming them in any way?  I can't think of any reason that I would be, but if anyone knows differently, I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks.

Hi - not a VS owner :) but I can't see how anything could be harmed, provided that there's no physical contact (and even then it's a bit of a stretch.) I'd be more worried about a hole in the plastic letting the dust in anyway. Where I live you're supposed to move out when renovations are taking place :)

Yep, it's on the level.  I guess I didn't realize that it would be considered too stupid a question to ask.

Welcome to the circle.  There are no stupid questions Rich, especially here.  Sorry for jumping to conclusions on this end but we have had some trollers stop by and leave their droppings.

Thanks.

I've seen plastic film ( I can't tell you actual compound, stretch wrap IIRC) not play well with lacquered finishes, particularly when pulled tight against the surface. Some sort of chemical incompatibility or reaction, I imagine. I'd be tempted to drape them loosely and not bother with pulling tight.

Might be no issue, but perhaps a possibility depending on finish and plastic sheeting.

Actually, now that it's mentioned, I've seen a similar thing with tube output transformers, the paint just got eaten into. They had probably been sitting there for years though.

That would be my concern as well. What happened to the velvet covers the VR-2s came with? That's exactly the type of situation they're for.

Thanks for the concern everyone.  I'm happy to say the construction was finished today and I've unwrapped my VR 2's and they're fine. No problems with the plastic sticking to the finish.  I guess I could have used the velvet covers, but I'd have had to wrap those too, to keep them clean.
