I've had a few things modded, including my current Oppo BDP-83 (by the way, a few months back after having the Oppo modded, I moved the DV9600 to the secondary basement system. I am not a picky person, but I would probably only go for mods from a couple of people. I also would not spend over a certain amount. Once a mod gets above $1.5k (and I have spent more), I sort of think about whether it is worth of it in terms of potential normal problems/repairs to the unit. I've also bought some expensive digital or video things in the past and I figure if you get more than 5 years use out of either, it's probably not far from the end of its product life cycle in terms of what is currently out there. So I avoid super expensive digital or video. I have DACs in the main and basement systems. A newer one in the main system and a 15 year old one that still sounds good in the basement system (where I use the D9600 as a transport) and that system doesn't see tons of use. I figure there are no moving parts as in a transport in a DAC. I also discovered for hi-rez, an HDMI audio de-embedder (I have the Port-ta PET 4000 switch de-embber which is less than $70 shipped) and find with my newer DAC, I prefer taking hi-rez from the player to the DAC. I also think that for the long haul using that is going to be less obsolete vs. other things over time. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
