Chris' HT2-TL's (RAAL) in crotch mahogany
« on: 21 Jul 2010, 09:04 pm »
Chris wanted a pair of HT2-TL's and a HT2C center channel in crotch mahogany.  But he did not want black baffles on them.  Since crotch mahogany is very busy, we decided to keep the front baffles simple so they not compete for attention.  We decided to use straight mahogany for the baffles and pick up some of the color in the crotch mahogany.

Here are the results...

And a close-up...

Happy listening, Chris!

Some day, one of your speakers will be on display in a fine arts museum.

Very nice  :thumb:

I was 100% decided on crotch mahogany, and then switched to burled walnut.  No regrets with mine, but it looks like i would have been happy with mahogany too  :D

Is it just the lighting or do the plinths not match the baffles?

Crotch Mahogany is officially my favorite wood now.  Amazing!  You're one lucky man, Chris.  Congrats to you, and welcome to the Salk family.  I look forward to your impressions!

It could be the lighting or just a slight variation from another part of the board.  The trim on the plinths was from the same board as the baffles.

Gotta say I didn't care for the stark contrast between the baffle and the mohogany. The baffle sorta stuck out like a sore thumb in Jim's picture. Then I saw the owners pictures where the baffle looks to be darker & more inline with the mahogany. Now this I like,, a lot.

yea, they are darker in person than in jim's pics....   the color of the baffle matches the lightest color in the crotch...  rather organic...  the baffle could conceivably have "grown" out of the front of the speaker...  even though it's obviously not from the same tree, it "looks" like it's from the same tree...  if you know what i mean....

comment from neighbor...  "these would have been worth what you paid for them even if they didn't make any music at all"....   they look THAT good...

of course, probably every salk owner feels that way...  :D

edit: btw, good choice in baseball teams.  :D

Welcome to the Crotch Mahogany Club!  I'm sure they will make some beautiful music. Maybe the Salk site will update soon with other similar veneering. Happy listening.

Well, they certainly look better than the mdf version I have propped up against the wall on top of two HT1 TL mdf prototype cabinets.  I hope they sound as good.

Don't worry--I hit him up for a pair of SS10 cabinets.  The big bass sections are up and running--I'm just waiting until Jim gets more of the molded upper cabinets in stock before completing the emsemble.

oops   I tried to upload an image of my beautiful HT1 mdf prototype wall cabinet, but of course I failed. It was quite stunning.
