JC's VMPS Cut or Cuts of the Day
« on: 19 Jul 2010, 06:25 am »
Since owning VMPS speakers is virtually a celebration of MUSIC, I thought I might throw out a cut or two every once in a while to suggest a way to celebrate.

Some of these cuts will be nostalgic and others technological masterpieces.

ALL are WORTHY of your VMPS REFERENCE LIST.

The Youtube cut should open in another window and you can enjoy the cut while you read the VMPS Circle. :green:

Here is the first of those cuts:

Rock Classic

Anyone with a great system KNOWS this (at the right volume level) is a religious experience.

Jimmy Pages Guitar riffs and Bonham's drumming with Plant vocals is as good as 70's rock gets.

Not only that however, the technical perfection of this cut is wonderful.

If anyone has ever performed a better rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I haven't heard it.

And the Classical Classic

This is one of my favorites Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition   (Salzburg 2008 Dudamel)

Turn up your computer System and ROCK OUT.  Wait for the Great Gate of Kiev (about 3:29 into the cut).  Talk about majestic. Rousing...Stirring... :thumb:

Bravo Gustavo!!

or how about a more straight laced Karajan version?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3rUbxbwGGg&NR=1

I could listen to that every day and still be stoked by the energy.

Victor Wooten - AMAZING GRACE

For those VMPS Sub and RM owners this is a BASS cut that you must simply get on your Reference Cuts.

There are several versions of this and most are live.  They are either of Wooten himself or with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

If you have the putty right on your PR's you are gonna die and go to BASS HEAVEN!!!

The textures, the harmonic overtones, and just the range of Dynamics and Frequencies will simply BLOW YOUR MIND :o  Not to mention the talent of Wooten.

I have this Live Album version and it (IMO) is the best one.

Do yourself a favor and visit the AMAZON site here and listen to the INTRO/Amazing GRACE cut

Personally, I'd go with this one by Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole

One things for sure a lot of people who've sung the song have died tragically young.

You Hughness,

I have heard Eva and I love her, and have her on many of my Reference Cuts and Discs, but even though the McPhee is a poorly recorded YouTube from AI, it still gets my vote for the best as far as how the artist connects to the emotion of the song.

If you have an EVA C that does that well post it so it will be here.

Hi Jim,

I too have that cut on some of my Ref Cuts lists and discs, but I wish I could find McPhee's perfromance on a CD as I think she puts more of herself into it (plus I like pretty females over guys most of the time)

But IZ's performance has generally been in high rotation at CES and THE SHOW for many years and is certainly a Classic.

Thanks for mentioning it.  I bet there is a YouTube. :green:

EDIT: Found it.  The YouTube video is fantastic and exactly the same AudioCut I use.

Hey Chris,

Oh Yeah, that one was coming.  You just beat me to it.

The bass run in the beginning is a very TELLING run to see how good your woofers are.

On many systems either the room or the speakers really "WOOLY" it up too much and bass detail goes out the window.

So since you got it into the mix early, here is the YouTube for those who have not heard it.

Oooops. . .I see you already placed that link

John....

Here's a nice number that's worthy of your "VMPS REFERENCE LIST"....a New York group that put out some fine albums from 1974 to 1991....David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison...better know as Talking Heads.

The track... "Road To Nowhere"....vocal opening, good beat....and you can dance to it...

From their 1985 album...."Little Creatures"....

Hey Ric,

Ya won't find me arguuing that Eva is not "top shelf" Reference Quality.

I DO like emotional connection from the artists and the "goosebump/hair on the back of your neck" moments.

This is the best EVA version I have come across.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce-5OWBNGNw

Hugh is also in the Cassidy camp and maybe he has another good version.

(You can never have too many Reference Cuts )

Here is an album to cut your "Classical Teeth" on.

The "Little Fugue in G Minor" is BEYOND spectacular :thumb:

It is probably rare now days.  I liked it so much I purchased TWO copies incase one got scratched.  This was in 1976.

I am pretty sure this is the cut.

If you can turn it UP do so. :eyebrows:

The first time I heard this was on a mirror imaged pair of Stacked Dahlquist DQ10s with Stereo Subs and 300wpc CITATION 16's bridged.

I could not beleive my ears.  It starts a little soft and slow, but OH what a Finis.  You have to wait for it!

Todays cut is from The ALAN PARSON'S PROJECT

Off the Pyramid Album

THE EAGLE WILL RISE AGAIN

Well produced, Eric Norman Woolfson has lead vocals and substantive lyric writing (for the time)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94yc7zMpwoM

And since I missed a couple days here is a BONUS cut:

George Harrison and friends Performing in Concert For Bangladesh "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Young Blood".

So many Music Legends on one stage:

George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Jim Keltner, Billy Preston, Alvin Lee, Bob Dylan , Leon Russell and alot more

Keltner and Ringo on Dual Drum Kits was incredible.
