Will an iMac output a bit perfect data stream.

If one properly sets up the "Audio Midi Setup" on the newest 27" iMac is the data stream out of the Toslink output "bit perfect".

Unless something drastically changed with the 27" iMacs (something I seriously, seriously doubt), the answer is "yes".

Yes the optical can output a bit perfect output. You can get bit perfect from itunes but you to turn off the sound enhancement features on itunes like the eq and sound enhancer and turn the itunes volume slider all the way up.

I believe the volume is automatically set to max when one uses the optical out.

Oops, I'm  wrong. I actually had the volume set to max though.

There are some DACs such as the Weiss DAC2/Minerva and the DAC202 that can analyze the signal coming from the DAC to determine if your set-up is bit perfect. This is done by using a sound file provided by Weiss. The DAC software has a reference file of the sound file that you'd provide from your computer, and can compare your computer's output to that file to determine if you have achieved bit-perfect output.
